A very popular PBM football format is the 'United' system. Each player
has a position from [Forward/Midfield/Defence/Sweeper/Goalkeeper] and
age [0-5] and a rating [1-12].

Teams play off by each player submitting a team with a line-up, where
the important part is the number of levels in each section of the pitch,
eg Defence, Midfield, and Attack.

The Defence is compared with the oppostions attack, while the Midfields
are also compared.

The number of levels differnce between the two counts for the number of
attempts on goal, and these chance are then turned into goals by a
chance number of being saved by firstly the Sweeper then the Goalie.

At the end of each year a player loses as many levels as his age, and
any over age 5 retire.

Players can be trained up by using Caching points which are gained each
turn, with more Points agined for winning matches.

It's a nice and fast system which can be added to (adding in extra
levels for home advantage, comparing the ststas in different ways if
tactics like Offside Trap are used, captains etc.).

There are a lot of other systems out there.
