American Flagship From: John@baptist.reno.nv.us Date: Fri, 10 Jan 1997 00:00:00 +0000 ========================================== January 8, 1996 PRESS RELEASE: American Flagship CONTACT: Bob McLain (mclain@tightbeam.com) ========================================== Bob McLain has sold American Flagship to John Hansen of Subtle Domination Games. The magazine will resume publication, on a bi-monthly basis, in the near future. The new owner will honor all paid advertiser and subscriber commitments, and he will also publish the many articles that were submitted to and accepted by the previous owner. The sale is good news for everyone who liked the quality of American Flagship but who complained about its infrequent publication. Bob McLain, the creator/publisher/editor of American Flagship, will remain involved with the magazine in a gradually diminishing editorial role. He plans to reprise his popular column, Helium Jungle, and to write more frequently, including at least one more 'head-to-head' feature in the style of the popular You Rule! Diary he co-wrote with Nicky Palmer last year. Bob's primary attention will now focus on long overdue improvements to TightBEAM, his PBM web site, and to his other gaming enterprises. John Hansen, the new owner/publisher/editor of American Flagship, will gradually assume the editorial reins during a 'transitional period' lasting approximately six months. John will call the shots, relying on Bob for advice and suggestions as needed. John will take over administrative duties immediately: all matters and monies relating to advertising, subscriptions, and article submissions should be directed to him. John's plans for PBM World, a global play-by-mail magazine, will likely merge with his plans for American Flagship, though at this point it's uncertain how much of PBM World and how much of American Flagship will survive the synthesis. Regardless of the outcome, play-by-mail gamers starved for a reliable *and* professional magazine may now look forward to the best of Flagship coupled with John's bold new ideas. No decision has been made on whether the popular but controversial 'modular format' of American Flagship will be retained, or whether the magazine will revert to a traditional saddle-stitch format. Bob McLain comments: "I had the magazine, the web site, the games. I couldn't do them all well. It was becoming apparent that I couldn't do any of them well. When John Hansen shared with me some of his ideas for PBM World, I felt it would serve everyone's interests if he built them atop the solid foundation of American Flagship. Thus the sale. I'm reminded of a quote from Henry Ward Beecher: 'It is not the going out of port, but the coming in, that determines the success of a voyage'. I took a leaky US Flagship, turned her into 'American Flagship', and then sailed her out of port. They all cheered when she set sail. Now, I'll leave it to John Hansen to bring her home."
