Box 90993, Industry, CA 91715-0993 SUBJECT: THE GALACTIC NEWSWIRE SERVICE - Volume 5, 9701.05 ================================================================== INTERSTELLAR NEWS BRIEFS DATELINE Aldebaran - Imperial pressure on The Colonies and The Outback has brought about the creation of a new Services Standards Certification Ministry that will be stationed on Spingle. The new authority allows only certain planets to provide value-oriented services. The edict, SR-BILL #1997-A dictates that a planet must have a certain Law or Underworld level to provide a given service. For example, fuel is only available from planets with a Law level of 4 or greater, due to the need for government protection against pirate raids. And gambling is not available on a planet with a Law level greater than 7 or an Underworld level of less than 5. Services that planets currently provide can be found in Bigelow's Guide on the web site, or can be looked up with the BG order. DATELINE Cor-Caroli - The headlines warned strongly on the infamous pirate planet of Macovia: Pirates Beware! In a story leaked to the motley marauders, a new Imperial effort to stave off the ever increasing threat of interstellar piracy was professed, The Empire will shortly be increasing the current bounty set for such criminals by 50%. A statement from The Imperial Bureau Of The Navy And Postal Service sites the need to have ships patrol the borders of The Empire far more important that chasing down petty criminals. "We feel that the victims should organize themselves to thwart the pirates.", said a spokesman. "We'll protect the homespace, and they can do the rest!", he said. The increase in bounty moneys paid by the government is expected to encourage more bounty hunting and reduce rampant buccaneering. DATELINE Sol - Earth-based megapublisher The Galactic Newswire Service has announced a return to weekly publishing of the GNS. Public demand, as well as an increase in sales and staff spearheaded the decision to make the change. The GNS was originally called The Galactic Inquirer when it started over 5 years ago, and was considered a gossip rag with an economics section. At that time, it was a monthly publication. Dramatic success of the venture increased publication to 2 times per month, and then weekly for a short period of time. The Galactic Inquirer was renamed to The Galactic Newswire Service when electronic delivery and online service became available. Also, the clientele had changed from mostly Gecko and Brogian housewives to a large core readership of professional merchants. The GNS gained a reputation for reporting news that other media refused to publish, but Imperial pressures and an overindulgent hedonistic staff overburdened the budget, placed The GNS in jeopardy and publishing dropped back to every-other week. We're pleased to be back! ================================================================== CARGO PRODUCTION AND STOCK INDEX This is current economic data gathered by the vast computer complexes at Megafalagon University on Earth.
