Atlantis 3.0: Times 33 From: Geoff Dunbar <gdunbar@prankster.com> Date: Sun, 02 Feb 1997 00:00:00 +0000 Subject: Atlantis 3.0: Times 33 Atlantis 3.0 Times September, 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Email admin30@prankster.com with game issues. Visit http://www.prankster.com (or email atlantis@prankster.com) for information or to join. There are a number of minor changes for this turn: 1) Some markets that inadvertantly got left out will now show up in towns and cities. 2) A mage casting Gate Lore will now have listed which units go through the Gate. 3) You can now buy "peasants", which will default to the correct race in a region. 4) Battle reports now indicate (at the bottom) which units were damaged in the battle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Still winter... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ White Order (162): Toorturing a person for several years, keeping them from the brink of death only to apply more - this is torture. Ripping off a fingernail to obtain information - different scale, still torture. > ...after I flood the list with Spleens... Yep, this is still mailbombing. Deserving of being removed from the game and being dropped by your service provider (if applicable). ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Greetings to the world - Another faction is here. Watch out near the gates, random jumps in progress. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "The indian right of possession itstelf stands, with regards to the greatest part of the country, upon a questionable foundation. Theor cultivated fields; their constructed habitations; a space of ample sufficiency for their subsistence, and whatever they had annexed to themselves by personal labor, was undoubtedly by the law of nature theirs. But what is the right of a huntsman to the forest of a thousand miles over which he accidently ranged in quest of prey? Shall the liberal bounties of Providence to the race of man be monopolized by one of ten thousand for whom they were created? Shall the exuberant bosom of the common mother, amply adequate to the nourishment of millions, be claimed exclusively by a few hundred of her ofspring?" I would really like to see a history of the conflict around Dunstar. Even better might be one from each side of the fight. What were the parties to the conflict? How did it start? What are the results so far? Histories of other conflicts would be good as well. Influance my opinion. Write the history books. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ok, now I'll do it! I'll attack those guards, and I'll take the town. News from the north told of mysterious disappearances of lone forest elves and the discovery of horribly disfigured bodies drained of blood. Half-mad witnesses blabbered garbled tales of sightings of an amorphous something too horrible to describe which radiated an almost supernatural aura of fear. But this was not what Nursie was worried about - that only meant Iglet, the runt of the brood, had entered the larval stage and was nearing pupation. What was worrying her was that she had lost the girl somewhere on her travels through the gates, perhaps spirited away by powerful magics. And rumour had it she had been adopted by a powerful faction in the south, and such as she should not delve into the magic arts... "Tell me, Gamayun, the fate of the girl?" asked Nursie to the bird. "Of that which can be told, I will tell all. For I am Gamayun, the Prophet Bird who sees all. With those who have the power shall I share all knowledge.." chirped the bird. "Well, get on with it." interupted Nursie impatiently. "Hrummph." squawked Gamayun "I'm not even getting paid for this.." "I'll buy some birdseed with the 50 silver" promised Nursie. "Very well.." chirped the little birdie.. 'When the boar has taken off his mask' 'Stands by his side his witch queen' "Is that it?" asked Nursie, somewhat annoyed "It doesn't even rhyme!" "Naturally I have to be vague.." twittered the bird "..since it is yet to be seen how the story will develop. But it does raise the delightful possibilities of introducing incest into the storyline, either with one of her brothers or The Masked One..." - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ New factions. There is no gate in the Nexus, so you need to move to any of the entrance cities on your first turn if you want to gate away to (hopefully) empty lands. Four men dead. He shook his head. The first, one of his men, had died when he had stumbled upon a hungry dragon. That was regretable. The other three however, had been ambushed after being granted safe passage. Reports from the Ambassadors claimed it was an honest mistake, but he had his doubts. And the fact that his unit was closet to the site of the ambush worried him. "Sergaent", he bellowed. "Yes sir", came the reply "Cancel all leaves and put the camp on alert", he order. "Yes sir" "Double our recruiting and training effort", he continued. "Yes sir" "Sergaent, what is the status of the fort construction?", he asked. "Ah, well sir", the Sergeant hesitated. Recently he upgraded again, from Fiancee 1.0 to Wife 1.0, which has become a real memory hogger, taking up all his available space. Although he didn't request any plug-ins, Wife 1.0 came with MomInLaw.02 and BrosInLaw2.2. Now it turns out that Wife 1.0 must be running before he can do anything. It seems that these 'upgrades' have been problematic. So, for now I'll be sticking with the original software Some features I'd like to see in the upcoming GirlFriend 4.0... - A "Don't Remind Me Again" default option - Minimize button, as the screen can grow unexpectedly. - Shutup/down switch - An 'installshield' feature so that Girlfriend 4.0 can be completely uninstalled if so desired (to prevent loss of cache and other objects) I tried running Grlfrend 2.0 with Grlfrend 1.0 still installed, but they conflicted over using the same I/O port. Another thing that sucks -- all versions of Grlfrend are totally "object oriented" and will descriminate between hardware, only supporting cards with solid-gold contacts. ***** BUG WARNING ******** Wife 1.0 has a catastrophic, undocumented bug. If you try to install Mistress 1.1 before uninstalling Wife 1.0, Wife 1.0 will attempt to delete MSMoney files before allowing the uninstall. Our ancient website is at http://www.wolfe.net/~azthar/GALE Any correspondence to GALE can be addressed to azthar@wolfenet.com Azthar Septragen Grand Elder of GALE =================================================================== It is with some regret that I announce this will be the last installment of the Smoking Wing. I would like to thank all my fans for their support, don't panic, I will still grace the pages of the Times with my antics. Just in slightly different format. I've decided it doesn't make sense for me to try to host a party if I am always going to be on the road, away from the happenings. I really don't expect to be back to the Helsicke area anytime soon. Besides there are more people lobbing hamsters over the wall than people coming in to sample the stogies. I would especially like to thank everyone who has generously delivered Spleens to ACME HQ. You guys are always welcome to stop by and help yourself to a cigar from my private stash. I'm not shutting down the Smoking Wing, I'm moving it to TRW! I have set a goal for myself to become one of the most prominent, if not THE leading cigar critic on the net. With my luck, someday soon I will voice-dictate times articles from the beaches of Bermuda and send them without wire... Some of you will be glad to know that this means I'll be spending more time smoking and less time spleening. To all those who have attempted to invoke divine intervention regarding my posts to the players list: 1) Grow up and get a spine. Learn to confront your problems like a statesman. 2) It didn't work. You just happen to be lucky I have found a new calling in life. 3) Do yourself a favor and have a cigar! It will improve your attitude considerably. Set aside an hour or so after dinner some day with your favorite after dinner drink, be it Scotch, coffee, or prune juice and try a Macanudo Portofino. They are easy to find and come in a cedar lined aluminum tube, so they will be fresh even if you buy them from a place that doesn't know how to take care of cigars. But don't inhale! Unless you really want to help fight off those soulsuckers from Sirius. 4) I will leave you to your boring little list, free to whine about infiltrating scouts in peace (as long as I have cigars to relieve the pressure on my spleen). I'd actually recommend #2 to everyone looking for adventure and sensual experience. Get a couple so you can share with your spouse or a good friend. Smoking a good cigar is like going to a movie, or taking a short vacation, if you allow yourself to think about the cigar and it's flavors and affect on your mood. A good cigar is nearly impossible to put down and it is like having to part with a lover when it finally must go out. It's even better when you can share the experience. Studies have shown that casual cigar smoking (2 or less per day) poses no significant health risk and (here's the bottom line) many major insurance companies do not discriminate against cigar smokers. (Now that's spam. Damned close anyway.) I'll post the Smoking Wing's URL once it's up, in case anyone is curious. Hey Dunster, heads up! Spleenmonger at 12'clock high! REWARD: 5000 silver delivered to the gate city of your choice, for the first person who sends me the Rantlu Gate #, once the accuracy is confirmed. I need to find a new gimmick or theme... But of course. Coming next week: "Diary of a Spleenmonger" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A death toll of 185. The time for revenge is upon us. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Skill reports for you all: building [BUIL] 1: A unit with this skill may use the BUILD order to construct buildings from stone. farsight [FARS] 1: A mage with the Farsight skill may obtain region reports on distant regions. This skill only works on the surface of Atlantis, but the report will be as if the mage was in the region himself. The mage may view regions are within the mage's skill level squared times 4 regions of the mage's region. To use this skill, CAST Farsight REGION <x> <y>, where <x> and <y> are the coordinates of the region that you wish to view. Note that Farsight does not work in conjunction with other spells; the mage can only rely on his normal facilities while casting Farsight. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A wise man once told me "Don't trust anyone." Well that's all fine and good, but I didn't trust him so I had him killed. I wonder if there is a moral to be learned? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fist of the White Lotus (4): Greetings, and welcome back to the White Lotus Poetry Corner, and now, your host, Zhuge Liang. "Hello, I've gotten much response on the first installment of this program, and I must say, with only one exception (apparently a certain faction does indeed believe that 'Babylon 5' is the best thing to quote), it was quite positive. "Now, to turn our attention to the poems for this issue, I know I said I might have a little bit of "Agamemnon", and I did look at several translations. But, unfortunely, while some of the translations were serviceble, I felt that none quite captured the poetry of the play in a way the truely superier translations do. Still, I'm going to keep looking (I have a few other possiblities to check on), so I may have the section I was thinking of including next week. In the meanwhile, I do have two poems for you today, still on the theme of war I introduced last week. "Last week, I tried to provide two very different poets, and poems, both in the time from which they were from, and in their perspective on war. This week, I have two poets who are much closer together (they're both writing about the same war, for instance), and whose views do not contrast as much (though they're certainly not writing from the same perspective). The Effect by Siegfried Sassoon 1886-1967 "He'd never seen so many dead before." They sprawled in yellow daylight while he swore And gasped and lugged his everlasting load Of bombs along what once had been a road. "How peaceful are the dead." Who put that silly gag in someone's head? "He'd never seen so many dead before." The lilting words danced up and down his brain, While corpses jumped and capered in the rain. No, no; he wouldn't count them any more... The dead have done with pain: They've choked; they can't come back to life again. When Dick was killed last week he looked like that, Flapping along the fire-step like a fish, After the blazing crump had knocked him flat... "How many dead? As many as ever you wish. Don't count 'em; they're too many. Who'll buy my nice fresh corpses, two a penny?" An Irish Airman Foresees His Death by William Butler Yeats 1865-1939 I know that I shall meet my fate Somewhere among the clouds above, Those that I fight I do not hate Those that I guard I do not love. My country is Kiltartan Cross My country men Kiltartan's poor No likely end can bring them loss Or leave them happier than before. No law, no duty bade me fight Nor public men nor angry crouds A lonely impulse of delight Drove to this tumult in the clouds. I ballanced all, brought all to mind The years to come seemed waste of breath A waste of breath the years behind In ballance with this life or death. "I hope you've enjoyed these two specimens as much as I have, and that's all the time we have for this week. Next week, if I can get a good translation of Agamemnon, I'll continue with the war motif, otherwise, I might switch to something else." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ooh, what a pretty horsey! <Snitch> the Mugwump ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Are the BioPhreaks dead? Just hibernating. Next turn, a new awakening. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Glass Chompers (65): I'm slow lately, but I do make changes when I have some time when I'm feeling like working (unlike today when I come home from work ready to go to bed), so check out the new What's New page to see what changes get made on: http://www.kraby.pair.com P.S. Is anyone else considering playing Olympia Game 2 which starts on the 18th? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Do we trust them ???? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Up
