G2 should be better than G1 in this respect for a couple of reasons:

1) Gold actually has value in G2. In G1 most people had beast armies,
and castles had huge incomes which they never spent. In G2 beast
armies are raised much more slowly, and castles have lower incomes.

2) NPs in G2 are strictly conserved, so powerful players are more likely
to not have enough NPs to spend cutting wood.

As you mention there should be a good initial market selling things to
newbies in starting cities. Many folks will want boats. Some
enterprising folks will probably want to buy claim stone from newbies
to build castles next to the starting cities, too...
