Good thing we have at least a small tax base. Outside, in the cold, snow-covered clearing, Baxtian was having similar thoughts... Each unit does an ammount of work equal to its level times number in the unit. Each hex has a target number of work points, which when reached, upgrades the hex to the best type, ie swamp to jungle, jungle to forest, forest or desert to plain. Obviously a very large number of work points are needed. Any takers? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Success! Every province in Atlantis seems to have either Fish, Grain, or Livestock. Grain and Livestock occur in provinces that have other useful products that will be exploited like iron, wood or horses, so extracting these additional resources will not use up any of a trade factions count of allowable trade provinces. Fishing also requires an investment in ships and sailors to carry the fishermen to sea. The ship must either periodically return to port (and lose a turn of fishing), or additional ships and sailors must be used to carry the fish back to port. Moving livestock to market requires but a single peasant, and grain can be moved with horses or a wagon. I suspect that under the current system very few players will fish. I propose that fishing be made an activity that doesn't count against the allowance of trade provinces. The Loremasters (224) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pigs! They're everywhere you want to be... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fist of the White Lotus (4): "Hello, and welcome to the White Lotus Poetry Corner; I'm your host Zhuge Liang. First, let me extend my thanks to The Seekers for taking my request for Voltaire quotes in last turn's Times, they were quite well choosen. I may put a quote or two here myself next week, though I usually restrict myself to poetry; I found a quote by Lev Lunts that speaks to the nature of art, and so I found it relavent to the topic of this series. As it happens, I don't have it handy right now, but I'm sure I'll be able to excavate it from the huge pile of materials stored in my laboratory in time for next week. "Now, on to this weeks poems. I promised to provide 'Musee des Beaux Arts', and so I have it for you today. The second poem I have selected is 'The Raven' by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (it's not that Raven). It is, admittedly, one of his minor works, but I've always liked it. The two poems, perhaps, do not present a unified theme, but I have decided to forgo such things for this week. Musee des Beaux Arts by W.H. Auden (1907-1973) About suffering they were never wrong, The Old Masters: how well they understood Its human position; how it takes place While someone else is eating or opening a window or just walking dully along; How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting For the miraculous birth, there always must be Children who did not specially want it to happen, skating On a pond at the edge of the wood: They never forgot That even the dreadful martydom must run its course Anyhow in a corner, some untidy spot Where the dogs go on with their doggy life and the torturer's horse Scratches its innocent behind on a tree. In Brueghel's Icarus, for instance: how everything turns away Quite leisurely from the disaster; the ploughman may Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry, But for him it was not an important failure; the sun shone As it had to on the white legs disappearing into the green Water; and the expensive delicate ship that must have seen Something amazing, a boy falling out of the sky, Had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on. The Raven A Christmas Tale Told by a School-boy to his Little Brothers and Sisters by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) UNDERNEATH an old oak tree There was of swine a huge company, That grunted as they crunched the mast: For that was ripe, and fell full fast. Then they trotted away, for the wind grew high: One acorn they left, and no more you might spy. Next came a Raven, that liked not such folly: He belonged, they did say, to the witch Melancholy! Blacker was he than blackest jet, Flew low in the rain, and his feathers not wet. He picked up the acorn and buried it straight By the side of a river both deep and great. Where then did the Raven go? He went high and low, Over hill, over dale, did the black Raven go. Many Autumns, many Springs Travelled he with wandering wings: Many Summers, many Winters-- I can't tell half his adventures. At length he came back, and with him a She, And the acorn was grown to a tall oak tree They built them a nest in the topmost bough, And young ones they had, and were happy enow. But soon came a Woodman in leathern guise, His brow, like a penthouse, hung over his eyes. He'd an axe in his hand, not a word he spoke, But with many a hem! and a strudy stroke, At length he brought down the poor Raven's own oak. His young ones were killed; for they could not depart, And their mother did die of a broken heart. The boughs from the trunk the Woodman did sever; And they floated it down on the course of the river. They sawed it in planks, and its bark they did strip, And with this tree and others they made a good ship. The ship, it was launched; but in sight of the land Such a storm there did rise as no ship could withstand. It bulged on a rock, and the waves rush'd in fast: Round and round flew the raven, and cawed to the blast. He heard the last shriek of the perishing souls-- See! See! o'er the topmast the mad water roils! Right glade was the Raven, and off he went fleet, And Death riding home on a cloud he did meet, And he thank'd him again and again for this treat: They had taken his all, and REVENGE IT WAS SWEET! "For those of you who don't know, the painting mentioned by Auden (Brueghel's Icarus) is kept in the museum in Brussels that lends its name to the title of the poem. It is (as should be obvious) a painting of Icarus falling into the sea, after flying too close to the sun. As for 'The Raven', Coleridge himself described it as 'doggerel', and it surely opperates on a much more superficial (one might might say, less poetic) level than Auden's poem (or Coleridge's two great poems). What I've always found interesting about it, is that it was Coleridge's idea of a children's poem, and in that, it is quite different from how we envision such things. Barney might not appreciate the sentiment, but I always have. "I'll have new poems next week, but I'm not sure yet what they'll be. If anyone has requests, I'd be willing to entertain them." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Vav. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LeFevre had, as expected, been transfered away from the university. To his surprise, though, instead of being posted in some forsaken jungle backwater (as he'd anticipated), he found himself assigned to found a new, highly specialized school in one of the largest metropolitan areas he'd ever seen! For the first time since he met the Lady Marguarite, LeFevre was actually enjoying himself. His students were enthusiastic and talented, and there was no shortage of funding or recreational activities. All in all, this looked pretty good! * * * * * Back at the university, the Headmaster was struggling. He'd planned on having Marguarite teach for at least two more months before he would have to take over the lessons himself, but she had departed abruptly just a week ago. Now the Headmaster was attempting to put together a curriculum out of Marguarite's sketchy notes and the rough draft of a textbook she'd been composing. Meanwhile, his rivals in the Natural Science faculty were out-doing him thoroughly; the NS department had graduated its first class a few montsh ago, with graduates already spreading out and landing prominent political appointments, and its second class was going to graduate before the Headmaster could usher his own students out the doors. In fact, his current students were taking NS courses this term, and probably would do so again next term, while he struggled to complete his own course outlines. And, needless to say, the Headmaster's evenings were much less satisfying than before. Perhaps he should speak to the registrar; maybe the recruitment of coeds could be increased... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The captain looked over the loot that his men had aquired from the dead goblins and smiled. For minor monsters they sure had a lot of stuff. "Sergent", he yelled. "Yes, Sir", the Sergent replied. "I understand that there are some monster lairs near our garrision". A plan began to form in the Captain's mind. "Yes, Sir", the Sergent replied. "They are all within one month's travelling distance?", he asked. The plan began to take shape. "Yes, Sir", the Sergent replied. "Good. I want a scout sent to each of the lairs.", he ordered. He might be stuck with garrisioning this insignificant village, but if his plan worked, he would be able to deal with all the monsters in the area.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The winds of war are growing stronger ... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ It seems that the strong wall around Carnforth is no more. Here is the first lection [SPAN] 1: Hey guys... The language of my message was Italian. Speaking about the game rules, it's a strange thing units can't improve their skills from experience. Fighting battles doesn't improve combat skill, producing grain doesn't improve farming, etc... Being skills of "common people" very limited (level 2 or 3), maybe an experience system is not worth the effort to make it. Nevertheless it could interesting to have some "elite" units, peasants and leaders who reach by experience a level impossible to attain with study. Saluti Faction 258 of Deus ex machina ------------------------------------------------------------------------ All of my units reveal faction (except for my spies and assassins) as a matter of course. If you do not then there has to be some reason. Why are you hiding who you are from me? Enemy factions have been intermixing with the neutrals and friendlys in my more crowded hexes so I apoligize right now for the dead scouts but it is more then nessecary. I did not atack any this turn but next turn I will. I am sending the warning though the times because contacting each faction would take far too long If you are not revealing faction then you are a spy, an assassin, or an idiot. I see no reason that anyone should tolerate spies and idiots in their territories and I do not in mine. On another point why the heck is everybody so vicious. Are my 24 hexs really so much more valuable then the thousands of other hexs in the game? Just get in a boat and find some land of your own you psychopaths. It would only be a few turns of travel and you could train while you sail. So you grabbed a few plains hexs. I did not expect to be attacked with so much open land nearby. I do not think your unequiped hordes will be able to withstand the counter strike no matter how many factions you have. (at least I hope not since we will not know the results till monday.) After the crushing defeat I suggest you leave. The obs leader I have with the strike force will reveal to me your faction numbers and I will destroy all of you that I can find. I understand that you are new to the game and did not apparently realize how much difference a few turns can make. So go away and I will not tell everyone who launched this totally unprovoked attack on me. If however your surviving units continue to harrass me then I will broadcast your identities to all and you will be met with mistrust and hostility for the rest of the game. Anyway my main point was that I need all factions to reveal faction in my territories and if you do not you will be attacked. And I don't want to hear some moron claiming that I will be "real sorry" if I kill a hidden faction because if you can actually make me "real sorry" then you do not need to hide who you are. Get it? Good. Cause if you don't you are going to. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Got milk? Uhh...yeah...see all the cattle out there? Shorten your orders template. Thanks, that was hope in the very last minute. Although I found an easier solution: Each unit receives no orders. In a few turns the units will recognize that it=EFs time to say goodbye and that means even less no orders and so less work. Cunning plan, isn=EFt it? (Thanks for a DOS program. It works well, only a few "=3D") ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I need more swords!!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Report from the Seeker of the Way (218) ============================== * Winter set in before the assembled band was able to move to the city. Damn this artic winds. Another four or five months holed up, until we can move on the town. * In the good news, the tower is finished, so at least the mages won't be wasting their time during this winter. * Sadly on of advanced scouts in the city was caught by the suddeness of the storm, and will be forced to produce longbows for his survival. He has a cardboard sign: "Will make Longbows for food". rlp@crystal.cirrus.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The longer I live the more I see that I am never wrong about anything, and that all the pains I have so humbly taken to verify my notions have only wasted my time. Step into the backroom of the Smoking Wing and show yourself, stranger. Something tells me we have met before. I would gladly tell you what it means to be Spleenmonger.
