Atlantis 3.0: Times 39 From: Geoff Dunbar <gdunbar@prankster.com> Date: Sun, 23 Mar 1997 00:00:00 +0000 Subject: Atlantis 3.0: Times 39 Atlantis 3.0 Times March, 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Email admin30@prankster.com with game issues. Visit http://www.prankster.com (or email atlantis@prankster.com) for information or to join. I can see I worried a few people with my request for relevent Times articles. Don't worry too much; even one line is ok with me as long as it is vaguely on topic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The army has done it to me again. At least they could buy me dinner first! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks for all the replies regarding how to move into a structure. Ill try again this turn, hopefully with a better result. Summary To move into a structure: MOVE j IN where j is the structure number. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ So you can't steal from the guards. Damn, what now? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Recruitment is going on in Dunster. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Has anyone found advanced items in large amounts? I have no trouble finding winged horses, mithril, floater hides, etc... around the area I have settled but they always appear in small amounts (always under 10). Also, doesn't it suck that building structures doesn't increase advanced item production in a hex.. Building a mine should increase the mithril along with plain old iron. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Major shakedown coming up over the next few turns. Watch for it. I am sure many of you will be very suprised by the result. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sire, a major miscalculation has resulted in a delay in the transport of the new colonists. However the problem has been rectified and things should now proceed according to plan. Also our counterinsurgencey operatives report a number of stealth units in our territory. They appear to be friendly at present but a close eye is being kept on their activities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ What exactly is a "double bow". Does it fire two arrows? Do you need four hands to use it? Why can you only make one out of Yew? Help me please - this is keeping me up at nights. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Okay, we have started construction on two new clippers and will soon begin to relocate to our new home. All is well. Our mages are almost paying for themselves now, and our tax base is finally growing. New factions -- remember that your mages can tax and cast earth lore in the same turn. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Peace talks have fallen apart. They were but a glimmer of hope. We must again pick up our bloodied swords and march back into the battle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eggman's Men (223): They surprised my most eggsellent mage... I will eggsact my revenge! (But not yet, damnitall) Ok, back to riddling... >All about, but cannot be seen, > Can be captured, cannot be held. > No throat, but can be heard. Easy, it's Wind, of course. How about this one: If you break me I do not stop working, If you touch me I may be snared, If you lose me Nothing will matter. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Have you noticed that TIMES is going into a U-curve: First it shrank as we all got richer (getting rid of some gimme 50 guys, btw. did that increase the quality of my favorite weekly ?) Now it grows again. Why ?, maybee because reports grow and logistics are turning into weekly nightmares. That means more mistakes for us warfactions, and suddenly you will lose 3 winged horses, if you dont get some fastfood for your transporter, I could go on babling, but let me make it short: Gimme 50 (here I go again !) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Beautiful day, don't you think? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Diastrophism (83): Oooooh! One assassination. I'm frightened. I say good ridance to the $50 reward. I still think only awarding signed entries would be a good experiment. It is comforting to know that there is some spare cash hidden away. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Wolfsbane is poisonous. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ People are getting mighty agressive at the Helsicke continent. GALE won't last for long, now that there is an enemy; for the enemy is within... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Last followers of PATO (277, eckner@iqe.phys.ethz.ch): A proposal: To increase the valuablility of the times i propose Geoff spends and extra price, say $1000 for an exceptional article/article series. Eligible is everyone who gets 20 email votes (sendable to Geoff). Send me or Geoff your opinions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OK, who fried my chicken after it fled the coop! I am SEVERELY disappointed. This is the last time I let you scum anywhere near my chickens. Next thing I know, you'll be choking them! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Deld's Consolidated monster list (for turn 38): anaconda [ANAC] (Combat 3, Hits 1) ,attacks 1 treasure : silver balrog [BALR] (Combat 6, Hits 200),Attacks 200? Soon it would reach the continent and link with allies to liberate Riggenthorpe. Already the orcs of the Dragon Legions on the Skyship Rolling Thunder and Ruffian Regiments on the Skyship Chain Lightning were polishing their swords and armor in anticipation. Dragon Grenadiers inspected their double bows and a few took target practice on the deck of the Skyship Ball Lightning. The Flying Dragon Battalion flew off the decks of the Skyships Hailstorm and Thunderbolt. But many miles to the south, the Skyship Stratosphere was on the critical mission with its complement of Chaos elite ninja dispersing on their winged mounts with their special equipment. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I suppose you already have this info, but just in case:- Defenders: Clan of Wild Men (1713), 8 wild men [WMAN] (Combat 3, Hits 1). Unit (14436) gets a free round of attacks. Clan of Wild Men (1713) loses 8. Clan of Wild Men (1713) is routed! Total Casualties: Clan of Wild Men (1713) loses 8. Damaged units: 1713. Unit (14436) loses 0. Spoils: wood [WOOD], 164 silver [SILV], perfume [PERF], livestock [LIVE], iron [IRON], 6 grain [GRAI], mink [MINK]. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Blue Wizards (294): So... I need to create an article that will please the great Geoff (just kidding little buckeroo!). A good rumor maybe. I havn't been in Atlantis long, but here goes. Graevsbygd, a starting city. Its an island. A not very big island. From the crowd of factions on it, a very well-known island. But then again, it's a starting city. The large alliances know this. But do the gateborn newbies? Ships, lots of ships, so many .... Maybe this is no new news. Maybe it was worth a few seconds interest on the part of those who gated into the hinterlands without a moments pause. Then again, does anyone really care? I apologize if this is really nothing new. I have not read through all the old Times issues yet. P.S. - Well done Sojourners. Debating Christianity is really not the purpose of the Times, but I know you did not start it. Great response though! I enjoyed it. Good stuff. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now that monsoon is over I think I will go south and get some sun. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To trust or not to trust, that is the question?!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ i'm looking for some interesting artifacts, have you an idea how to create one? i'm now gate lore 5 with all my magicians and i wonder where my armies will go... Graevbygd, Helsike, Ratlu? i have the gate numbers but i don't know who attack... i should roll a die...good luck !!! The Random unit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hehe... finally 5 in all the foundations with all my mages... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Horses, I've got them coming out of my ears. My kingdom for some stone. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jeri Bushid carefully walked down the wallway of the inn. He banished all nervousness from his conciousness. He kept reinforcing the idea in his mind that he belonged here, that he was nothing out of the ordinary. That way, he would appear that way to everyone else. He strolled down the third floor hall, slowing at every door he passed. Finally, he heard what he was listening for, the voices of Calmin and Vorrer, fifth door down on the right. Jeri kept walking, took the back stairs down, and left the inn. The black cloud roiled in the sky, torn and twisted in the high winds. The moon and stars were totally obscured by the violent clouds above. It was cold on the roof, but Jeri didn't notice. He put it out of his mind the best he could and concentrated on the job at hand. It was about three hours from dawn and the time was near. He slowly sat up and got to his knees. Each joint cracked quietly in the early morning chill. He cursed to himself, muttering that he wasn't a young man anymore and couldn't keep doing these jobs. He rechecked the hook that he slipped over the roofridge earlier in the night. He got to his feet slowly, trying to ensure the roof doesn't creak. He reached back to his backpack and felt inside a special hold he had cut into the side and pulled out the end of a rope. After securing the end to the hook he placed earlier, he slowly walked backwards to the edge of the roof. He pulled out only enough rope to get down to the third floor window. The wind picked up as he lowered himself down. He sighed a sigh of relief when he found the window shutters did not have locks. He slipped into the sitting room of the rooms, looking and listening for people. Not noticing anything, he padded over to the table where paper were spread out. He smiled as he picked up each piece of paper, quickly read what was on it, and placed it back exactly where it was. Photographic memories can be a blessing and a curse for spies. You can remember any document you see, but also remember the face of every person you kill. After looking at everything that seemed important, he slipped back out the window and climbed back to the roof. He retreived all his gear and started out for his trip. Roof to roof he bounded, slowing making his way to smaller buildings until finally he was low enough to leap to the ground. Quickly he made his way out of town and headed to where his employers were waiting. His mind drifted, thinking ahead to when he could see his wife and three children again. Do you have proof of souls and the rest? The invisbile and non-existant look very much alike. > What I can't understand is how the author can say the phrase "world of > dreams" with a straight face after condemning the Christian worldview for > its unreality. I have dreams, and I've heard others say they do as well; > this is all subjective evidence. Nevertheless, I don't doubt that dreams > exist. But what is this "world of dreams", some sort of "cosmic > unconsiousness"? I think the pot is calling the kettle black. I didn't write what you commented on, but I think you missed the point entirely. The "world of dreams" is just that - dreams. Its fake, made up, fiction. (Well dreams exist we have scientific proof people dream, but its what we dream that is being talked about here.) The author feels christianity is also fiction, but feels the world of dreams is just a far better fiction for the reasons that were listed. It is not "pot calling the kettle black" because the author knows both christianity and dreams are fiction. > I believe in Jesus Christ, I believe I have a personal, spiritual, > relationship with Him. Many people have come > to believe in the accuracy of the Bible and the truth of Jesus's claims > by travelling this path. How about objective, repeatable, scientific evidence? If one accepts dreams and all gods as fiction then you have no subjective evidence to argue against. However it would be enlighting to see why you think your subjective evidence is better than the subjective evidence from the follower of another God. > The quote reminds me of my high school english teacher who, in trying to > persuade us towards his own existential worldview, told us that we > shouldn't let anyone tell us what to do, or think, or value. A few issues ago, my predecesser presented a poem by Lewis Carroll, which is typically described as a 'nonsense' poem. However, just because a poem is a nonsense poem, doesn't mean that the poem makes no sense, or serves no purpose. "While some may feel otherwise, poems that have typically been described as 'modern' are also, in a sense, nonsense poems. Here today I have two poems by two well known poets who are often considered modern. The Emperor of Ice-Cream by Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) Call the roller of big cigars, The muscular one, and bid him whip In kitchen cups consupiscent curds. Someone apparently gave the go-ahead signal to the city masters before Masterson's men were in position. It wasn't a big deal, really - just the loss of a cut of the profits. Masterson certainly didn't hold it against the city leaders; they thought they knew the plan. And who knows? If the undead gang didn't rise to the challenge, it might still be possible to get a piece of the action. Masterson sent the order personally to move an agent into the region. Whether it was too late or not to get intot the action, there was a messenger or two who had let Masterson down, and who would need a bit of attention. Good thing. My one-liner could have well been AXED! Talk about censorship on the net! :-) Now don't get me wrong. I truely enjoy reading the CREATIVE manifestations of other players imaginations. I generally skip the one-liners, ignore the Manifestos, and avoid the attempt of one player to broaden my knowledge of alledged literature [quoth the Sun Tzu, Nevermore!]. And when I am awake and aware enough, I like to continue the various story-lines of fictional characters I have woven into some of my own contributions. But I do NOT always have the time, and I find the 50 silver useful. I'm not saying the GM can't do whatever he wants to with his own game. I am reminding him that this very subject was brought up very early on. Not be me, either. I see three solutions that avoid the issue [and effort] of censorship...I see the GM has even suggested one of these... 1. Give everyone 50 silver every turn. Then only those who truely want to say something will submit to the Times. 2. Eliminate the 50 silver reward for Times submissions. Same result as #1, just means that players will have to be REALLY careful. 3. Eliminate the Times. The battle area certainly was strewn with enough dead bodies for a large battle, but identifying the GALE troops from the others at first seemed a difficult task. However, one keen observer noted that all the dead troops on one side of the field were lying in large pools of their own excrement. It was later confirmed that these troops were indeed from the East, or GALE side of the conflict. "Guess they got a little bit scared and couldn't handle it. Too bad for anybody to die that way," was the summary noted by one grizzled veteran of the war. "Never seen it happen to that many troops at once, though. A horse! My kingdom for a horse!" The traders in these parts were notorious for their cunning greed and no doubt would later claim they had a verbal contract to supply one horse for one kingdom. And if he remembered rightly here was also an unhealthy historical precedent - cry despairingly for horse and shortly afterwards die. So instead he howled: "My ship! My ship! Where the hell's my ship?" "Another delay" cringed his advisor, hovering just out of claw-reach. Blue smoke curled from the Great Khan's ears. Why was he surrounded by these incompetants? It had been hard enough raking together enough funds for his own studies in these impoverished jungles and now he was ready to teach the move to the city demanded no delay. There was also the *small thing* that without his faithful sidekick now aboard the longboat he was defenceless against any assassin who chanced to roam into his domain - the protection offered by his master of lumberjack named "Observer" being dubious indeed. As he was fuming over these things his staff slipped from his grasp and he made as if to pick it up. "I'll get it" exclaimed the advisor, rushing in to serve his master. Tht was a big mistake... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Marak slowly walked towards the shadows under the tree. There was a = slight wavering in the air. Warriors from many Clans came together to plan their invasion of the Southern Kingdoms. Clan differences were put aside for the first time in Ages. Soon, the warm lands to the South would witness the power of the Ice Folk. Upon the massive sheets of Ice that dominated the lands of the Ice Folk, a mighty host stood ready to march South. People from the Clans of the White Leopards, Ice Flayers, Tusk Warriors and Frost Reavers came together to form an army, and together they were called the White Wolves. Soon, other Clans would come together and form other invasion forces, but the intial onslaught would be led by the White Wolves. Post to the times! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The scout ran back to the command post as quickly as his legs would carry him. He arrived out of breath and was clearly agitated. The captain of the guards strode out of his office and came over to the man. "Calm down soldier. Tell me exactly what you have seen, quickly now." "Yes captain, about forty men and orcs on horses, all wearing armour and carrying swords. They've just made camp outside the town. There was another man with them sir, not carrying a sword or armour but he was dressed all in black." "All in black, you say soldier. Quickly now, tell me did this man have any kind of emblem or decoration at all on his tunic?" "No sir, it was completely black, so were the rest of his clothes." "Ahh, I know this man and I know his master, curse our luck. Return to your lookout post and warn me as soon as they make any move away from their camp." "Yes sir." The captain called in his squad leaders and told them to prepare their men for the coming battle. He also dispatched a runner to headquarters to warn central command of the invasion. He knew that his force was doomed. Reinforcements were several days away and his men were facing an enemy that was far better trained equipped than they were. His only advantage was that he outnumbered the enemy force. It would have to do. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I just witnessed 8 mithril appear where there were none before... I'm on vacation until Turn 42. Any donations of spleens should be kept on ice until then. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Helsicke (AP) - Where Angels Feared To Tread (43) reasserted control over its faction this week. The owner of the faction had been on several different trips, and members of his alliance graciously carried on the task of orders submission. But now, having returned first from sunny Cocoa Beach with tan, and Austin TX, the faction owner has to begin coming to grips with his own "schooltality". His time in the wonderful university environment of fast connections and free internet service will soon be done. This may perhaps lead to the ultimate downfall of WAFTT, not from attackers or disinterest, but inability to adapt to the changed environment. We'll see what happens. In other WAFTT news, mages learned several interesting things this turn (which for security reasons cannot be revealed), and the outmarches development is finally beginning to pick up speed as WAFTT has finally recruited a large number of combat troops. - end of report ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Beware the Spleens of March. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ So Azthar's spleen hungry hordes have been defeated, and the Western portal of the GALE lands lie open...
