"You fool ! It's no f***g sandstorms; riders they are !! ALARM !!!!!" A bit later, the captain looked to the hundreds of riders, waiting before the city gate... Then one figure rode forward.. "Listen ! As you can see, we are here in number but we do not care about the control of this town, we just need some ration, as we are going in the underworld, chasing dragons...This city will remain at the hand of your current ruler. Can we enter now ?" The captain thought for a while... "You won't attack us ? Just buy weapons and food ?" "Fear not, brave and loyal captain, we'll not risk the wrath of our Lady; she is allied with your lord, and it would be death for us to attack you." The Captain was a bit more confiant, even if he had only 20 men to guard this city.. "Right, we'll open the gates" The riders went back in his rank, to report to his commander "They'll open the gate, Sir" Cmdt Lujan: "Of course they'll do, we are ally !" "But, sir, don't you have the intent of pillaging this city ?" Cmdt Lujan: "Did we say we won't ? We will not attack... Beside, we need the money" Cmdt Lujan: "Well, everybody remembers their orders ? No killing, no raping, no burning is that CLEAR ? Now GO !!!" "Yes sir...." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Has an all mage faction the ability to tax ?? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ More than 4 thousands of soldiers in Dunster. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ We run and we bow ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Okay, do you need to have banish undead set as a combat spell? Which would be better -- Fire 2 or Banish Undead 1? On other fronts, does every hex have a special product (ironwood, etc.)? We're building the new boats, ans soon our journey will begin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Will I survive the next turn or will my men become undead? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Golden Empire (189): Some never participate. This was really easy, but if you didn't get it, don't lose heart. Maybe this will be more challenging: I drive men mad For love of me, Easily beaten, Never free. What am I? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Help! I have more silver than I know what to do with! Why did it have to be Sphinx's? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ And lest not the winds of war widen upon a three fold plain as the armies clashed in the plains of old Blood stained the land as it sometimes will swords raised the earth as they sometimes do Into the inferno of chaos we sometimes throw ourselves into it's eternal joke of terrible irony It is our enemy and our friend it is a killer of men and a mitigator of hate it is vent through which conflicts might be resolved throught it's terrible way Never forget It is always among us waiting to erupt in it's terrible fury War IS eternal ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tell me .. wise man what is better in Atlantis: Units with crossbow 3 ? Hey, why do you reveal me ?! :-) I can not help wondering why the anti-GALE movement is so eager to blow the cover of their agents ? - must be some clever trick I don not understand... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Vote that GALE has won the game? Give me a break. I won this game over two dozen turns ago. I just let you all keep playing, becuase I don't want to ruin your fun. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Down in the desertic valley, where the dunes fade slowly into the beach, is lying Fizban, for ever. After millleniums hit by the sun arrows, the Sphinx is not in dread of fireballs. Take care young magicians. Now the expedition has flown away, giving up the carcasses of the ripped ships. I will see you in Walhalla Fizban. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Report from the Seeker of the Way (218) ============================== * And, thus began the attack. The storms began to gather as the mage began the ritual to summon a whirling tempest of a storm. The air grew chill as an unnatural fear came from the shadows, and flame begin to circle one of the mages as he called forth the powers of the elements. Swords were passed around the warriors. Dwarves began to the tighten the straps on their chain, and take practice swings with their mithril swords. In another town, more dwarves were readying for the trumphet call that would call them in as reinforcements. Even the ruddy sea elves were ready for battle. Even though they were not the combat equals of the dwarves, they would prove to be an important part of the battle. The town guards noticed the large numbers of town visitors, and became nervous. They suspected the raiding party's entent. rlp@crystal.cirrus.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Could the owner of the Raider units in Porthcawl swamp and the owner of TreeCutter and Merlin's Guards in Corran swamp and the owner of Ftr in Corran swamp please contact me? The Loremasters (224) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Fist of the White Lotus (4): "Hello, and welcome back to the White Lotus Poetry Corner; I'm your host Sun Quan, and I'm coming to you from the city of Kaddervar, possibly the the future home of a phantom monster. My predecessor included a poem from Wilfred Owen in his early discussion of war, one of Owen's most famous works, but I feel like going back to him. For whatever reason, it feels relavent. And so, for you today, perhaps Owen's best know work, and another one that's not quite so well known. DULCE ET DECORUM EST by Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge, Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs And towards our distant rest began to trudge. Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind; Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind. Gas! GAS! Quick, boys! An ecstasy of fumbling, Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time; But someone still was yelling out and stumbling, And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . . Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light, As under a green sea, I saw him drowning. In all my dreams, before my helpless sight, He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning. If in some smothering dreams you too could pace Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin; If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs, Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues, My friend, you would not tell with such high zest To children ardent for some desperate glory, The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori. The Parable of the Old Man and the Young by Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) So Abram rose, and clave the wood, and went, And took the fire with him, and a knife. And as they sojourned both of them together, Isaac the first-born spake and said, My Father, Behold the preparations, fire and iron, But where the lamb for this burnt-offering? Then Abram bound the youth with belts and strops, And builded parapets and trenches there, And stretched forth the knife to slay his son. When lo! an angel called him out of heaven, Saying, Lay not thy hand upon the lad, Neither do anything to him. Behold, A ram, caught in a thicket by its horns; Offer the Ram of Pride instead of him. But the old man would not so, but slew his son, And half the seed of Europe, one by one. "And so, that is that. Now, before I leave you for another week, a good thought towards the galleon 'Bergland', for soon it lands on nameless beaches, where who knows what manner of creature resides." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Chronicles of The Tribe No one missed the Chronicles? Too bad... The tribe is less magical & more business now. We are growing too fast for our exiguous area: moving out is a must. Let's jump out guys, let's just disappear in a puff of smoke and rematerialize in the promised land. How many turns until we can really do it??? (As if people are not trying...) Paulo, Parrot-Man of The Tribe (123) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Did nothing come of the talk about being able to pay silver back into "unclaimed"? I thought that was a very good idea, with some limits, of course. How about:- No more than the original 5000 silv. Only one lump sum payment allowed per game year. Can come from any unit, but only at a Gate City? With many units having thousands of spare silver, any free transfer is too easy to abuse. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ >> The world is not a cylinder! Of course it is! I moved north from the upper edge and was denied passage. Can't be done! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Could the units in the swamps around 80,20 reveal faction please? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I can stop anytime, I can, I really can!!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ More Orcs I need more Orcs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ We're still holding onto Burscough despite lame attempts by GALE to steal it from us. We should even be able to hold onto it during the monsoons when GALE has the terrain advantage over us. HA! HA! Retreat from Burscough AZTHAR! You can't win. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hello ? Helllooooooooooo ? I'm selling <<<< POUF >>>>> : Another insurance seller, now he is a nice green frog.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Yew exists in the demon pits! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I wonder if this is enough to earn 50 silver? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Glorious Organization of Divineship --------------------------------------- GOD is a peaceful alliance with HQ in Jotel. GATE LORE FAILED! Despite Noogal's best efforts, him and his escort were teleported nowhere. Noogal tried lousy excuses, like 'heavy' guards, and wrong constructed buildings, but the rumours had it that he himself hadn't been able to find a gate to walk through! WRITERS ON VACATION! No more articles was written, as all journalists decided to go for vacation. They were last seen outside Jotel, fanatically plundering the farms for eggs. DO YOU WANT TO BECOME A GOD? Okay, very few monsters "can ride" or "can fly" so have your scouts study to riding 1 and give them a horse. This will force other units with the fishing skill to pay the highly skilled person to learn where he fishes. It's been so long since I set foot on dry land. I hope these people are more of a fight than the last bunch were. I am itching for a FIGHT.... Beware the IDES of March! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "When you're [fighting] strapped to a log, you cain't have a knife that's too long." - Jim Bowie, when asked why he needed such a big knife. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I wonder what this GALE announcement may be ... maybe they will all follow their policies? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Last turn, I lost my longboat. This turn, I will hopefully exact revenge in the desert. I am watching you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Elf Supremo watched the coast recede with relief. Indeed, he wondered why the hell he hadn't pillaged his way out of this morass when he had first arrived. Then he remembered. Sigmund, his faithful sidekick had advised that a steady income and a settled life would allow the leaders to study. It amused the Great Khan to watch him now as he occasionally broke surface to either splutter instructions to his observation class or scream in terror as a seamonster nibbled at his toes. "The CDD, after great debate, deemed it necessary to resort to force. However, recent diplomatic contacts have given us another chance for a peaceful settlement to the situation. We are hopeful that the remaining Aserne units will be able to leave GALE territory peacefully, and that relations with their allies in the Bordeaux Brethern will return to normal." All scouts will die soon ------------------------------------------------------------------------ In the coming cataclysm, you'll need all the friends you can get! Mutual non-aggression will only go so far. To maximize efficiencies, specialization and close cooperation are required. The big question is: will it merely be the alliance with the most mages that wins? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ force [FORC] 3: No skill report. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Voting a solution for the annoying 50 silver problem? In last Times, we read: I'm not saying the GM can't do whatever he wants to with his own game. I am reminding him that this very subject was brought up very early on. Not be me, either. I see three solutions that avoid the issue [and effort] of censorship...I see the GM has even suggested one of these... 1. Give everyone 50 silver every turn. Then only those who truely want to say something will submit to the Times. 2. Eliminate the 50 silver reward for Times submissions. Same result as #1, just means that players will have to be REALLY careful. 3. Eliminate the Times. [boo! hiss! no more adventures of the Parrot-man!] I propose another solution (number 4): Eliminate any reward for Times submissions, and permit to transfer 50 silver every turn from a player's unit to unclaimed funds. (This needs a little program rewriting - stating a new order - but I think it's easy). I think we should take a decision on this subject. So please vote! (If a solution is voted by numerous players, we can propose it to Geoff. You can submit another proposal if you want). Faction 258 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jack Masterson was, as always, master of all he surveyed. The town was still his, and always would be. He was relaxing in his favorite garden spot, with a nice view of the fountain with the new gargoyles spouting water through their mouths. The new *cement* gargoyles, meticulously crafted just weeks ago from the base material that was formerly the two messengers who had so greatly disappointed Jack Masterson. Masterson swirled the ice in his glass as the man he'd sent for walked up. He quickly dispensed with the mundane pleasantries and got his guest seated in another lawn chair. "Now, Cutter, what've you been up to lately, and how's it going?" "As you probably know, sir, I've been training some new laborers, for you to send out to the neighboring regions. I'm almost done. Another month and you can ship them out." "Very good... Now tell me, are you happy with your work?" "Why, um, yes, I suppose I am." Cutter seemed to grow nervous as he spoke. "After all, this is what I'm paid to do." "Yes, of course. But I have to wonder how happy you might be, seeing as how you haven't improved your own abilities in a very, very long time!" "What? But... I've been busy, there's been a lot of men to train, I've been assigned to a half-dozen regions in the last year, and I..." Masterson waved his hand dismissively, emphatically. "I'm uninterested in excuses. I pay you for results! The only reason I'm not paving my driveway with you right now is that those few men you've managed to train over the last year have been useful, and somebody needed to do that work. But you spent way too much time just sitting around waiting for something to happen. now it's time you got off your fat behind and did some real work for a change. Not office crap - field work. Take a look at this map." Masterson unrolled a scroll. "Here, and again here, are where those weirdo people from the bubble are settling. We're too late to get a piece of that action." When Cutter opened his mouth as if to protest, Masterson cut him off again. "No, that ain't your fault, I know that. Anyway, you go through here, past their regions, and you reach -" "Forests!" Cutter exclaimed in surprise. "I haven't set foot in a real forest in - gosh, a long time. Nothing but jungle around here." He glanced up, for the first time meeting Masterson's gaze. "You mean, you want me to help work the forests?" "Exactly," said Masterson, satisfied by Cutter's reaction that he'd made the best choice for this job. "You pull this off, and we'll just forget about all the slacking off you did last year. In fact, if you do really well, this may pay off for you quite, quite nicely." The two talked long into the night, working out their plans for turning the empty forests into paying propositions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Seventies: if you are scouting with units that are self described as claimers of territory, you are looking for trouble. I encourage you to rename your units "scouts" or something similar. There are many bars of soap in the woods and you may slip and fall. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "What the ****! What do you mean we're behind the magic curve? How could we ever catch up? " "At this point, we need to look at our goals and capabilities. How long are you planning on being here?" "I'm good through the end of June, with a slight chance beyond that." "What do we do?" "While you may not achieve exalted arch-mage status, there remains much low-level magic to be studied and reported on. Rumors of whole spell classes that have yet to be discovered abound. This may be what your goal should be." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ AHH.. discovered mountains.. now I have all terrain hexes within easy reach of my core cities.. unstoppable!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "The Sergeant, Sir", the sentry to his tent reported. "Send him in", the Captain replied. "Yes, Sergeant?", he asked as the Sergeant entered his tent. "The scout has reported in. He's found a Horde of Goblins!", the Sergeant reported. At last, thought the Captain. Something his garrision could destroy. "Where?", he asked. "Here", the Sergeant pointed at the map,"two South East of the village" Fortunately I moved the Garrision the Captain thought. "Prepare the men to move. Then order the Scout to Attack Sergeant. We shall reinforce him." "Yes, Sir", the Sergeant replied. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Well thats anouther plan that will never see the light of day. The majority of residents seem to support the rebels. The economy here has been dominated by the Chibchas for some time - the Chibcha livestock market is responsible for one in every three jobs in this swampy boomtown - and the regular government is widely seen as corrupt. Whether or not the Chibchas will win the battle is uncertain, but the evidence of their military might is abundant. Nonetheless, the city guards have a near monopoly on swords, and to a casual eye would seem to be more than a match for unarmed villagers. One question on everyone's lips is how the Chibchas will govern if they come to power. No one seems sure whether they favor entry into the global gateway marketplace of the future or a harsh regimen of collectivist farming. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Greed Is The Sin, Greed Is The Sin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ WANT TO GET A FEW 10000 SILVER? Azthar Septragen Grand Elder of GALE ==================================================================== Diary of a Spleenmonger. April, 4th year, 3rd Atlantean Era (3AE). Really now, do you think a vacation will keep me from the Times? With so many people venting spleen? Did GALE get their butts kicked? No. I got my butt kicked and I'm running like decapitated poultry... NOT! Careful where you step out in that desert Davros, you wouldn't want to have to clean your boots. Oh, and thanks for scrubbing that duck mage for me. I really needed a free faction point. I just couldn't get myself to GIVE 0 1 LEAD. Gloat while you can. I'm just getting warmed up. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dunster News Report: ************************************************************* A vile creature has been found in the swamplands of the North, He seems poised to slaughter the Garrison in the region. We must send reinforcements. Sound the Alarm for we shall help them. In other news there is no news to report, everthing seems to have become quite boring. Travel News: All new factions wishing to locate to the Dunster Region please contact me for travel visas, at kgrindst@inlink.com Security News: All factions who paid their $$ this turn will be protected for the insidious Assassins Guild that has set up shop in the City. Those who don't pay will probably be sorry. You have been WARNED!!!! Grayson, The Dark Legion (7) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ It seems there is a new resource in the lands, and you don't need trade units to exploit it. I'm not telling though. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sojourners (192): Dear Geoff, Could you please think about adding a SPOILS flag. Setting this flag would allow the unit to collect spoils after combat. Turning it off would exclude the unit from spoils taking. This would help keep my single-man units from getting bogged down by unexpected spoils and separated from my larger units. This would also allow me to designate a set of quartermaster units which collect all the spoils--for which they are conveniently equipped with wagons, or lots of horses, or whatever. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The good times will soon roll. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Plunder fertile country to supply the army with plentiful provisions. - Sun Tzu ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Everything went as planned.. One setback though <underground forest -tax base of $69!> My units will starve.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Scouts must be paid. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Is there a reason why Ranc 1, Farm 1 have no skill report? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Skill reports: shipbuilding [SHIP] 4: No skill report. healing [HEAL] 5: No skill report. sailing [SAIL] 4: No skill report. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Have SEP quit the game? They have stopped fighting and rolled over. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ... This is Snorf Blitzer with SvenNN the Sven News Network, I am here in Helsicke and things have become a little tense here. The Nameless alliance is rumoured to have attacked GALE and this seems to ahve cuased some disorder in GALE. An example of this is the rumour that last turn a GALE member broke an agreement with a neutral faction and attacked most of the neutral's forces on the continent. Now for Sven's response to this development: "I think that the situation here in Helsicke is too unstable right nopw, and I am going to build a boat as fast as I can sail the heck out of here. Oh, and don't forget to 'Come one Come all to Sven's flying circus, soon to be formed in a not yet determined location." That was Sven's reaction to this GALE situation, back to yet Borggie. T'anks Snorf, und 'dat 'as bean the Helsicke repot for SvenNN. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I really do want my 50 silver. Relevant rumor: ACME factions are not to be trusted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you declare someone hostile then you expect to get into fights with them. If you are stupid enough to fight them in a hex with city/town/village guards then you are going to lose! Ooops. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Gee I love these stories. An alliance is actually thinking of storming Riggenthorpe. Well, I have my magic toothpick ready to pop all those balloons. :) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Just as things start going right, something happens to upset the apple cart. This game is getting too close to real life. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nightgaunts (191): Once again, the Alliance of Independent Factions (AIF) is proud to announce another new member faction: Aesir (88). If you are interested in becoming a member email me at twells@shore.net.
