World War IV From: Keith Burnham <Keith@pagoda-games.demon.co.uk> Date: Tue, 01 Apr 1997 00:00:00 +0000 World War IV Game News What follows is a brief rundown of the news featured in Issue 12 of the Pagoda Press, which is being mailed to players during the next week or so. Non European players can request a copy for a minimal fee to cover postage (approx. $1.75). Most of the information will also be uploaded to our website within the next few days, and an updated sign-up form will also be added to the site after the weekend. Company News For the 1st April we will be making a slight change to the turn fee. The basic fee will remain the same, but overseas paper players will be charged an additional 30p per turn to cover postage. For email/wimp players there will now be a standard fee of L2.75 for using either or both. The introduction of these changes (our first increase for 2 years) will help ensure that no increase to the main turn fee should be introduced for the remainder of the year. Im keen to add new scenarios, and welcome your comments and suggestions. One such suggestion has been to set-up a mass team game, pitching 20 US players against 20 UK and European players. We havent worked out any details yet, but if the interest is there then Ill look into it further. Standby Positions Occasionally a player will drop a position that is still viable in that game. In these circumstances we will assign a replacement player from the standby list. The only criteria is that the replacement player has not played more than 5 turns in that game previously. The turnfee will be halved for the game (L1.50). Game News Classic WWIV =========== We are now taking sign-ups for a classic game of World War IV, using the original rules of the game. I hope to get this up and running around June time, and it will be the only classic game run this year. Players must prepay the first 10 turns in the game (L30) in order to avoid drop-outs, and we will be assigning positions on a random basis. Join early to avoid disappointment. Eco-Tech ======== New game now taking sign-up, with a view to a late April start date. Send in your 10 favourite and 3 least favourite countries. Sign-up L10.00 inc. 3 turns, then L3.00 per turn. Americas Game ============ Players will be entered into either the basic or advanced scenario depending on availability. Next game due to start after Easter. Sign- up L5.00 inc. 3 turns, then L1.50 per turn for this 10 player variant. Team Game ========= Ive got a couple of players interested in taking part in a 2 on 2 game, set on the South American map used for H2H games. You can join either with a partner or be assigned one at game start. Sign-up is L5.00 inc. 3 turns, then L1.50 per turn. Regular H2H Games ================ The set-up fee is L5.00 inc. three turns, thereafter its L1.50 (or L1.00 for email). H2H Competition ============= Following the successful introduction of the Head 2 Head games, we will be running a Player of the Year competition starting May. We will alter the starting stats slightly from the regular H2H game, so previous players are not at an advantage. Players can join either the paper or email version, with turnaround being the only difference. Paper games will be played at a maximum of 7 day deadlines, email games will have a maximum of 5 day deadlines. The turn fee for the game is L15 (or L10 if you play in the email version) and will run to a maximum of 15 turns. Requests must be received no later than 30th April. April Madness =========== In preparation of the H2H Competition, we are running a very special offer throughout the month of April. Pay a one-off fee of L15.00 (or L20.00 if you cannot use wimp to submit orders) and play up to three separate H2H games as often as you like throughout the month. You can have your name entered into the player pool or you can arrange a private game yourself (whereby you find your own opponent). Of the three games, at least one must be a private game. We will take names for the pool from this weekend (22nd March) and will start assigning games on the 1st April. At the end of the month players will have the option of continuing to play any unfinished games, the fee for which will be negotiated on an individual game basis, based on turns processed to date. You can submit turns as often as you like during this period, and as soon as both sets of orders are received the game will be processed. We normally log on at least 4 times per day (morning, lunchtime, late afternoon and evening GMT) though slightly less at weekends. With the right opponent you should be able to play at least 20 turns in the month for each game, an incredible saving on the regular turn fee. We want as many people to take part in the H2H Competition as possible, and hope that this offer will encourage everyone to give the game a go. For those unaware of the scenario, the game takes place on the single South American map. Players take control of Argentina and Venezuela, with Mexico, Peru and Brazil being computer controlled. The game will last between 15 & 25 turns, unless one player resigns before that time. The strength and set-up of the npc countries may vary from game to game (certainly from regular games and the H2H competition games), thus adding to the surprise and ensuring differing tactics are used.
