Atlantis 3.0: Times 43 From: Geoff Dunbar <gdunbar@prankster.com> Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 00:00:00 +0000 Subject: Atlantis 3.0: Times 43 Atlantis 3.0 Times July, 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Email admin30@prankster.com with game issues. Visit http://www.prankster.com (or email atlantis@prankster.com) for information or to join. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ How does 100 orcs fare against the cityguards.... let's find out. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ OK, a head has rolled within GALE. But I want to see all 54 heads roll. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Proposal: Atlantean convention to ban the immoral act of Dragon Slaying. Seconders? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Nightshade shall be used, and wolfsbane, and all their ilk, for the time is near. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "The area was more populated than we initially thought." said Baal to Baxtian as he sketched in the locations of two more cities on their map. "True, but that's not a bad thing. More places to tax and sell to" returned the warrior. "I'm concerned about competition though. Even though we haven't seen a sign of any others in the area, that doesn't mean they're not here. They may be sneakier than we are." Baal looked over to Berel, the up and coming spy master. "While we may not see evidence of others yet" the slender spy said "we will soon have the capability to have adequate warning of any movement within our borders." Baxtian responded "And those horses we found will really speed up exploration and aid in troop movement. Now if we can just find some iron for weapons. The troops are coming along nicely, but if we can't arm them, we don't have much chance of success in combat." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Dunster News Report (the REST of the story) ------------------------------------------- Unlike some other BIASED news reports, we have decided to set the record straight. Dunster is a city of no escape. The war here has made everyone so nervous that any unidentified or unaffilliated units are summarily executed. I've lost more units trying to get out of this hellhole than I care to imagine. Sandwiched between two ruthless and well-established alliances (the Souther Cross & Dark Legions) makes un-allied factions like myself easy pickings. I REALLY wish I hadn't already sunk so much of my starting silver into this dump. To the overlords of Dunster: Open the gates! Let us flee this wretched city. We mean you no ill will, we simply want OUT! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Escaped Slaves of Pazuzu have just opened a gate from the hellish slave pits of the Abyss to the Atlantis Nexus. Unfortunately, only one mage was able to step through before the gate closed. He is known as Q the Mystic, and is the self-proclaimed Greatest Warlock to Ever Walk the Earth. The fact that he knows not a single spell or cantrip does not seem to phase him . . . ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Peace talks have fallen apart. They were but a glimmer of hope. We must again pick up our bloodied swords and march back into the battle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Diastrophism and GALE Storm (83): We're still here.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ These gate cities sure are crowded. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Well, that must be the quickest I've done my orders since I was a little faction with a couple of men. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Haha... you actually do get a spellreport for GATE-4... Scared ya, didn't I? Muhahaha!!!! ;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ And the Flying Fish Shipyard in Helsicke is flopping (I mean Hopping) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Forces are advancing on Bastak. The city should fall within 4 turns. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Slow and steady wins the race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Mutual Non-Aggression? Peacefull Co-existence? "This is good, but what is best in Life?" From the balcony of Graevbygd's most run-down and common whorehouse, the Duc du Blangis watched as his servants began work on the ship. It would take the entire monsoon season to finish, but then ... ah! Then she would sail! Over the seas it would carry him, far, far away from the confines of this thrice-cursed City. Only in total seculsion could he find the freedom to pursue his dark libertinous dreams. Soon, very soon now, his friends would arrive from beyond ... and none dared hazard a guess as to what terrible crimes they would collectively seek to commit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Has anyone realized the significance of this turn number ? If not, you can get a hint from eckner@iqe.phys.ethz.ch ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The first of the month and the scout is frying a panful of tasty sausages in the town square. It is the same every month, a feast he can not afford at the start of the month then, as the month draws on, eating less and less until finally at the end of the month he goes unfed for a few days. This does not help his mood any, he can never tell whether he'll be paid next month or not. If he had any sense he would be more careful with his money and save a little, but life is short. Drawn to the aroma a City Guard approaches and trys to chase the scout away, but this scout knows his rights. Guards are authorised to prevent taxing and random violence but not using council property for firewood. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Alas the rumours of my death are untrue. I'm merely undead. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Does anyone know if high levels of carpentry allow special things to be built. Also how does one build a balloon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Another one for the list. Sandlings (27703), 9 sandlings [SAND] (Combat 3, Hits 1). Spoils: 269 silver [SILV], 2 chocolate [CHOC], pearls [PEAR], 2 chain armor [CARM], 2 velvet [VELV]. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eggman's Men (223): War is a matter of vital importance to the state; a matter of life or death, the road either to survival or ruin. Hence, it is imperative that it be studied thoroughly. - Sun Tzu ------------------------------------------------------------------------ now i buy plate armors and enchant... i progress slowly but surely... the unknown, (even by his friends) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Lich, lich, lich, lich... come here little one... come on, nobody is going to hurt you. Trust me... just a little bit closer, just a tiny little bit. That's it... just come here... WHACK! ... there much better. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hey its getting a little crowded down here. Did someone leave the gate open? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hellfire, its getting a little bit to hot for me. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Seekers (40): Hint of the week: How to turn out 10 level 5 leaders every turn with no work on your part. (Once you set it up anyway.) unit 1 ; Taxers @give 3 xxx silv ; money to buy 10 leaders each turn and train ; 75 leaders in whatever unit 2 ; 8 leaders, level 5 in whatever @teach 3 unit 3 ; 65 leaders, level 5 in whatever @study whatever @give 4 10 lead ; 10 fully trained leaders ready to use @buy 10 lead ; 10 new leaders unit 4 ; over flow leaders ready to use @work ; always leave at least one leader or you'll ; have to change the give order The key is you start with 65 leaders at level 5 (15 months of training). 65*15 = 975 total months. Add 10 new leaders lower the level to 975/75 = 13 months for each leader. Then with just one month of training with teachers its back to 15 months or level 5. Naturally you can generalize this to regular men and use different skill levels. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Faction (307): The Speakers of WHO have entered the world of Atlantis, we will gladly lead you in any and all religious ceremonies that you might require. As the Great God of WHO views all as equals (Excepting Monetary Donations--of course). Coming to a Random Gate near you soon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ June, Year 4 The neophyte had just emerged from the nexus, entering the bustling city with a sense of awe and hope. He just knew a fabulous adventure awaited him in this new unknown world. He strolled the main street of the metropolis watching the large number of troops from various larger and older factions goosetep, stomp and clatter before his eyes. This complex and crowded world eventually had him disoriented and confused so he decided to seek the advise of the "experienced ones". He stepped into the street as a group of mithril clad warriors approached him. A dark figure rode in the lead of the group. He decided he would approach him. "Sir, may I have a minute of your time," he shouted, raising his hand to get the riders attention. The dark figure took no notice of him, leaning over his lieutenant discussing a far away war. The neophyte frowned as the horse passed, splashing mud and horse dung onto his cloak. The final insult came as one of mounted soldiers trailing the entourage extended his boot, knocking him into the black muddy ruts of the road. Laughter erupted from the mounted warriors as well as some of the bystanders. The dark figure still did not seem to notice, too involved with his affairs to realize his fate had just taken a turn. The neophyte rose the best he could scraping the grime from his clothing as he stared down the main street, memorizing the face and the coat of arms. For what reason only the future could tell. August, Year 7 The dark figure looked at the horizon, watching the mass of troops advance on his keep. The war machines could be heard clamoring over the broken ground even from this distance. Numerous campaigns had him weary, this unpredicted one was no exception. His last diplomatic couriers had returned without their heads. There seemed to be no motivation for his enemy but to arrive at this point. The invaders had ignored everything but this one goal. Why? Fire rained down, erasing any possibility of knowing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Deld's Consolidated monster list (for turn 42): anaconda [ANAC] (Combat 3, Hits 1) ,attacks 1 treasure : silver balrog [BALR] (Combat 6, Hits 200),Attacks 200? Faces knotted in concentration, six combatants sought to bring down a single defender. The lone swordsman sidestepped left, headfaked right, parried two blades simultaneously, then struck a jarring blow to one of the six. In similar fashion, the remaining five became four, then three. The solo swordsman ducked low and drove his fist deep into the chest of one attacker, waving off the other sword strikes with his mithril blade. Their numbers cut to a third, the attackers froze as they watched the silver-eyed defender step over a crumpled body and form a rigid combat posture. Nothing moved as the attackers uncertainty held them as still as the defender's steadfast readiness. The winter wind howled a mournful tone through the mountain trees as the combatants evaluated their advantage. A crow cawed in the distance. Like a thunderclap, the one roared and leapt to attack the two. The two mesmerized fighters seemed paralyzed compared to the speed of the mithril armed warrior. One of the two fell immediately, yet fate smiled upon the last of the six, making a reflexive twitch become a perfectly timed sword movement that intercepted the charge of his assailant. The mundane sword tore deep into the shirt of the attacker, causing him to drop his mithril blade and kneel to the ground, clutching his chest to staunch the flow of bright red blood. The last of the six sheathed his sword and said flatly, "now give me four silver." Johnny Clone raised his head and laughed. "At last! The six of you finally amount to the first level of combat." The five fallen warriors stood up, massaging fresh lumps and bruises. "Very good. This month has passed quickly." Said the Lord Clone, swabbing up the last of the blood oozing from his superficial wound. "Now go out and do that to every peasant in the realm. This is what is known as taxing. When you're done 'taxing' the local population. Hire ten peasants and train them as I have trained you in the art of combat. Set them to taxing and hire ten more. Continue until we have a force numbering in the hundreds. When I return, we shall mobilize against the usurper." The Technician, the only warrior who stood without injury, asked, "Sire, where are you going?" "To check in on an old mentor. Some one who can help us cause Humongous Damage." Many miles away, a wizard saw through the eyes of a crow. Learning what he needed, he broke the mystic link and reported to a large figure standing behind him. "Lord Sevrin, I have discovered a new threat to your magnificent reign. The former Lord Clone lives, and is building an army to march against you. He mentioned a name that I recognize. Might I suggest..." The large figure raised it's hand. "I do not need your judgement on this matter, Krenshai. I have a plan." The mage Krenshai turned back to his study, thankful that the immense power of Bird Lore had once again made him invaluable to his liege. ------- End of Forwarded Message ------------------------------------------------------------------------ >> The owner of these units should be aware that the "(soon to be) >> glorious alliance of RIP" is currently involved in a war on Rantlu. >> To date, RIP has lost thousands of troops, compared to a handful >> of losses for us (including 5 Hill Dwarves two turns ago -- ouch, >> that one really stung!). >> Contact Clan McCloud (166), pep@frii.com.... > But you're correct, with your track record you need all the help > you can get. > --Fnords/R.I.P. "Hello, thank you for joining me today on the White Lotus Poetry Corner; I'm your host, Sun Quan. After the chaos of the past few weeks, the White Lotus kung-fu school once again has time to devote to the finer things in life, at least for a little while. "After the somewhat bizarre affairs that have gone on recently, it got me thinking of several poems by William Butler Yeats. Yeats certainly lived through times of crisis and chaos, and some of his work deals with those themes. For you today, we have two poems of his. The Second Coming by W.B. Yeats Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. Surely some revelation is at hand; Surely the Second Coming is at hand. The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert A shape with lion body and the head of a man, A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun, Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds. The darkness drops again; but now I know That twenty centuries of stony sleep Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle, And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born? Easter, 1916 by W.B. Yeats I have met them at close of day Coming with vivid faces From counter or desk among grey Eighteenth-century houses. I have passed with a nod of the head Or polite meaningless words, Or have lingered awhile and said Polite meaningless words, And thought before I had done Of a mocking tale or a gibe To please a companion Around the fire at the club, Being certain that they and I But lived where motley is worn: All changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. That woman's days were spent In ignorant good-will, Her nights in argument Until her voice grew shrill. What voice more sweet than hers When, young and beautiful, She rode to harriers? This man had kept a school And rode our winged horse; This other his helper and friend Was coming into his force; He might have won fame in the end, So sensitive his nature seemed, So daring and sweet his thought. This other man I had dreamed A drunken, vainglorious lout. He had done most bitter wrong To some who are near my heart, Yet I number him in the song; He, too, has resigned his part In the casual comedy; He, too, has been changed in his turn, Transformed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. Hearts with one purpose alone Through summer and winter seem Enchanted to a stone To trouble the living stream. The horse that comes from the road, The rider, the birds that range From cloud to tumbling cloud, Minute by minute they change; A shadow of cloud on the stream Changes minute by minute; A horse-hoof slides on the brim, And a horse splashes within it; The long-legged moor-hens dive, And hens to moor-cocks call; Minute by minute they live: The stone's in the midst of all. Too long a sacrifice Can make a stone of the heart. O when may it suffice? That is Heaven's part, our part To murmur name upon name, As a mother names her child When sleep at last has come On limbs that had run wild. What is it but nightfall? No, no, not night but death; Was it needless death after all? For England may keep faith For all that is done and said. We know their dream; enough To know they dreamed and are dead; And what if excess of love Bewildered them till they died? I write it out in a verse - MacDonagh and MacBride And Connolly and Pearse Now and in time to be, Wherever green is worn, Are changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. "I know the second poem is fairly long, and it takes up more space than I usually like to do so here, but it seemed worth including. It was indeed a terrible beauty that 1916 saw, and not just in Dublin. As war rages over Atlantis, we can appreciate that it is not without asthetic value (as Frances Scott Key might have agreed) and perhaps contains values of other kinds (as reflected in the writings of Horace, among many, many others), yet it certainly has its costs. "Good luck to those who fight, and may the Great God Geoff protect them for at least another month. And may He smile upon the White Lotus kung-fu school in the battles we will surely fight, in nameless lands, against unknown foes." ; #end ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I hate winter.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Die, lich, die! The victors in all cases were the Nameless. The reasons for battle are simple. The SEP invaded us and have always put on airs as the bad boys of Atlantis, so a war was definitely in order. GALE and the Nameless have squabbled over the city of Burscough for quite some time. Azthar always planned to invade us anyways, so when his Burscough invasion failed, we went on the offensive. Adrian took advantage of the situation and landed a force in the village of Sinan. This should be cleaned up next turn. He did disrupt the training center there, but the overall cost is not bad for the Nameless. As to what is next, probably a long campaign in GALE and SEP territory. It was early morning, and the day was streaming in through his window. He stood, bending slightly. As he shuffled to the light, he felt the stiffness ease. The warm sun brought relief. The cool spring air raised his consciousness. "What a bad day to be studying!", he said to the world in general, feeling the emptiness of the room behind. Easing his head out the window, he gazed at the spring and the town. Peering down, his eyes strayed from pedestrian to commoner. Following the street down to the town square to his right, he saw nothing of report. A few town guards were passing the time by the fountain, staring at pretty maids and tossing stones in the circulating waters. A few early merchants were opening their stalls motioning greetings to one another. A soft change of sound below him broke his budding daydreams. On the street below, Ragnar could hear gear clinking and boots softly scuffling on the stone. Looking below and to his left, he saw three dozen men-at-arms moving quickly up the street in two files, each hugging to the walls on either side. As they approached the square, a few bowmen appeared from an ally, joining the files. Just then the guards in the square rose in rspose to the clash of arms echoing from antoher direction. With a cry, the files detached from the walls and rushed the square. The guards turned to look and then spun to flight, departing the square. Their foes pursued, and also vanished. The noise of battle died as quickly as it had come. Ragnar was left with a scene much the same as before the attack, minus a few guards. He wondered what change was afoot. Surely, these invaders were warriors associated with this magic school. How, or why, would anyone else move to take control of this city? A procession of mounted nights answered his thought, trotting through the town's square in unhurried pursuit of the previous action. Discerning their shields, Ragnar found them similar to heraldry on the cloak of his current Benefactor. Any questions of his own, immediate, personal safety vanished. excerpt from "Many Tales of Atlantis" by Harpa the Storyteller ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Report from the Seeker of the Way (218) ============================== * The secret of Mithril armor has now opened up to us. Already the backlog for this wonder armor is several years long. * Another city captured. This one went very smoothy. 120 guards were easier than the 80 guards. * Negotiations have been started with the Mountainmen concerning lands in our area. A treaty is in the works. More to come. * More preperations for future attacks on the unfortunate city guard. rlp@crystal.cirrus.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Shadow Circle (6): >From the Office of the GALE Grand Marshall: In a resounding vote, the GALE Grand Assembly elected Thor Christensen of the Mountain Men to the post of GALE Grand Elder. Official GALE business is directed to the Grand Elder's office at ThorC@UH.EDU - congratulations to Thor and a hearty "Well Done!" to all of GALE for keeping together through its second election, well-known to be the most difficult in the lifetime of a democratic state. The Grand Marshall sadly reported a setback in the conflict with the Nameless Alliance. In the recently conquered port of Sinan, terrible tornados swept through the GALE ranks, causing death and confusion. Reports from the survivors indicated that the tornadic activity was being regulated by enemy mages... The GALE Council of Magic and Education confirmed that this was clearly within the capability of the arcane arts, and has already dispatched counter-magic forces to the area. Construction of the GALE University was halted last month when the Grand Marshall's Office failed to pay construction workers' salaries. The workers responded by striking, but a settlement hsa been made with the labor union and the workers are expected to resume construction this month. The Grand Marshall apologized publically to the workers and assumed full responsibility for the beaurocratic blunder that resulted in the witholding of the workers' pay. Glory to GALE!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ATTENTION NEW PLAYERS Looking to get a little help starting out? Let us help you! They're everywhere you want to be... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Word from the "front" was bad. The Dieppe raid was a forgone conclusion It had accomplished its goal. The invasion of the underground was anticipated, but unpleasant none the less. Now nearly 2000 nameless faceless beings wandered the underworld with their new found ally, Fred. Another 6000 passed through the beaches of Normandy on their way to Berlin. Meanwhile the Nameless were recruiting new allies and factions all the time. The Nameless fleet hovered expectantly off the coast, waiting for the right time to strike. Things looked bleak indeed. But the Nameless were careless. They forgot one key item...the Lurker in the Lake. As they coveted the lands of GALE, so too others coveted their lands. The Lurker was cautious. The Lurker was patient. Of course this is all rubbish. There is no Lurker and the Nameless have nothing to worry about. They shall soon overrun the last bastions of GALElandia. The Tribe did something bad, really bad...and we are taking this opportunity to apologize. Due to the dangerous combination of miscomunication between MDU and COBRA factions and The Tribe's own sloppyness, we ended up slaughtering some units from COBRA, our allies. We will help our friends to return ASAP to their prior status in the mountains of Kobbe. Troops with the returned spoils and some provisions are on their way. However, as if that is any consolation, the offending faction 112 has no one alive in the area after last turn. Alex, The Holling Winds - 256 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hej alla barn, jag heter Rulle. Idag ska jag dda en drake. Hejd! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Chronicles of the Ice Folk Lord Kell, Clan Leader of the White Leopards and Supreme Commander of the White Wolves invasion force, examined the plans of battle that were before him. It all seemed simple enough he thought. His superior numbers as well as the hardiness and courageous resolve of the troops would surely spell doom for his foes. But something continued to nag him... "Lodeni, please summon Traketh of the Frozen West", called Kell to his second in command. It was well known that the Frozen West Clan provided the swiftest and most silent spies of all the Clans. Thus they were sent out to bring back information about the Southern Kingdoms well before the invasion set forth. Perhaps Traketh would have the answers he sought. After a time, Lodeni of the Ice Flayers returned, and with him Traketh of the Frozen West. Traketh bowed deeply before his commander, a hint of deep respect present on his wind-burned face. "My Lord Kell, I came immediately upon your summons. In what way may I assist you?". Kell replied, "Traketh, it is good to see you. Let me explain my summons. Everything is prepared for the invasion of the Southern Kingdoms. Our superior troops and numbers are sure to spell doom for the defenders. But something bothers me, something one of your scouts brought back from his last foray into the South. It is this stuff called...", Kell thought for a moment, "...steel". Traketh frowned, "Yes Lord Kell, it is said that the Southern Kingdoms employ weapons made of this. Swords I believe they call them. This steel is a strong material, and cuts through bone and sinew alike, dealing death when it strikes. I know of no such thing in the Frozen Plains and Tundras of our homeland. It tis rumored this 'steel' comes from regions of Mountains in the South. My agents have yet to confirm this though." Lord Kell thought for a moment...This steel wrought into Swords bothered him a great deal. The Ice Folk, although hardy by nature, were not of great numbers, and little could they afford to lose masses of warriors to Swords. "Very well, I thank you Traketh. Let me speak to the Lord-Father of this. We must gather this steel into our possession before our invasion. I feel it will be necessary for our invasion to succeed. The Lord-Father will have an answer". ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Bye Azthar. Wotta nidiot, to turn on his own GALE people. Pure and utterly evil, through and through. A baser band of blackhearted brigands has yet to soil this fair earth. And yet they, through their actions, to the extent that they contributed to the downfall of Azthar "For the good of society, lock me in a padded room" Septragen, have worked good. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HolyHandGrenade [HHGR]: "Thou SHALT pulleth the pin from the holy hand-grenade, and thou SHALT counteth to three. The blue banner was tattered and torn, and the white cloud emblazoned on it which had shone so brightly was now grey and faded. I am Darkwing Duck! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The commander was not pleased. The previous turn had met with a potential crisis. A great Dragon had been observed by his southern scout. It was well within range of the commander's base of operations. Even now his guards and taxers were hastily organizing the encampment for travel. Within the week they would leave for the lush plains in the north. There they would be well out of the beast's winging range. The journey would even give him time to begin amassing his army to sieze the village to the east. As for the scout, well, he either fled in safety of died. He could not concern himself with such matters. Later, when his colony was more established the great Dragon would be vanquished and it's hidden treasures obtained. Until then the Commander would concentrate on building up his forces. He could do nothing until the village was captured and the plains fully exploited. This land was indeed lush, but it also was proving a land of great dangers to equal the rewards. Very well then, this land would test the might of his forces and make them stronger in the end. The weakest soldiers would be culled out by various beasts and his own abilities would be increased. A few more months he thought, a few more months of isolation and this land will be mine for the taking. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Oh dear, I didn't send in a Times article last turn! Things are going quite well. Switched from one alliance to another, along with slightly over half of the old alliance's membership. It seemed the thing to do, somehow, but it would take too long to go into all the details here. Besides, nobody really wants to read someone else's dirty laundry, so to speak. Life will go on. Now if I could just spend less time reading and answering game-related email, and more time writing orders that aren't riddled with mistakes and maybe even inventing something interesting for the Times, life would be good! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Armored Galleons for sale. e-mail at Agalleon@aol.com Serious inquiries only. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Big Jim looked in awe at the portal. When this reporter noted that such action was not yet approved by the GALE leadership, Bochica noted that while in political matters the Chibchas were subordinate to GALE, this was a religious matter. "Human sacrifice is and has always been an integral part of our culture," he said. "I can assure you that the Aztharians will be treated far better than we treat any of our own citizens after we catch them and right up to the moment of their deaths, as befits their role as intermediaries to the hereafter." Popular sentiment here in Malvaig is running highly in favor of this proposal, although a strong minority prefers to kill the Aztharians on sight, saying that they are unworthy to be sacrificed. This reporter found no one interested in negotiation or peaceful settlement. This seems odd, as at present the Chibchas are known to have no contact whatsoever with the Aztharians and would seem militarily unprepared to meet them in battle. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sphinx's! Why did it have to be Sphinx's? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sir Brinsfield Nevill-Smythe cleared his throat pointedly. He didn't like being made to wait by anyone, even by such an important personage as the head of the company. He looked around the roughly hewn temporary headquarters with distaste. Work was proceeding on the castle but rumor had it that technical delays had pushed the delivery date back again. Apparently orders had come down telling the builders to @BUILD CASTLE and they had started a second castle by mistake. Quite amusing, but impossible to achieve with current STON production. The receptionist looked up from her stone table with a gap-toothed smile. "Lord H. will see you now, sir." She was wearing a business suit made out of animal hides and horn-rimmed glasses. Obviously a local bararian. Nevill-Smythe strode stiffly through a crude wooden door into the darkness of the presidential offices. The misshapen bulk of Lord Humongous loomed in darkness behind a gigantic stone altar that somewhat resembled a desk. The annoying little desert dwarf was standing slightly to the side grinning evilly. Sir Nevill-Smythe surpressed a shudder at the sight of the disgusting creature. How it escaped death in constant proximity to Humongous was inexplicable. "Smythe." came a subhuman rumble from Humongous, "Perhaps you'd care to explain to me why I have no mines built. My people hunger for PARM and we must have more IRON to produce it. My armourers sit idle, consuming donouts and coffee at union wages. I hired you to replace a bumbling idiot and find you are no better." Smythe turned white with anger. "Sir I beg your pardon! The miners who were hired to build the mine have not been trained yet." "And why is that?" "But you yourself did not allocate the funds to train them! Indeed," Smythe noticed the desert dwarf wincing and reaching for a mop and bucket. What was the little devil up to? "even without teaching they would have gained at least 30 days but instead they had to borrow money from the goon squad just to survi-" his words ended suddenly as his head left his body at high speed. Lord Humongous sighed, a sound reminiscent of a furnace bellows being compressed too rapidly. "Why can I not find a decent MINI teacher?" The desert dwarf shrugged as well as he was able while mopping the desk. "Dunno boss." His eyes smouldering behind his hockey mask, the Lord of the Wasteland slammed his fist into the stone. Here is what I know about Dragons: 1) They shoot fireballs. 2) They are Combat 6, Hits 50. 3) They are at least Tactics 1. Here is what I suspect: 1) They are tactics 5. 2) Their fire skill is 5. (10-50 attacks at level 5). I am also guessing that fire attacks are similar in effectiveness to crossbows (~5-25 deaths). 3) They have plate armor equivelant. In the most optimistic scenario (you get a surprise round on the dragon, no armor), you only need about 100 fully trained orcs (w/swords) to break the dragon. This goes to 300 if the dragon is plate armored. In a no free round for either side scenario, you need to plan on an additional 30 or so orcs for casualties. Double this number if the = dragon gets a free round. My intentions are to attack a dragon, once I have a tactics 5 leader, a flying unit, and at least 400 orcs. I should be able to tell from the first battle round casulaties, exactly how tough dragons are.
