Straw Poll - results From: thomasSPAMGUARD@clark.net (Mark Thomas) Date: Tue, 08 Jul 1997 00:00:00 +0000 The following is the summary of results I received in the straw poll concerning the creation of rec.games.pbm.announce. Basically, not enough people care to come close to creating such a group. Votes and comments are included. ------- The purpose of rec.games.pbm.announce (all references to PBM games refer to both commercial and non-commercial games): Provide a newsgroup for the posting of periodic PBM game advertisements (period TBD). Provide a newsgroup for the posting of PBM newsletters, PBM related newsgroup FAQs, PBM web resource pointers, in game writings (i.e. the Atlantis Times), and similar materials. Provide a newsgroup for announcements concerning the state of currently running PBM games, and new PBM game openings. ------- For Against MODERATED 8 4 UNMODERATED 4 6 OK Needs work PURPOSE 4 4 ------- bampton@cs.utk.edu Howard Bampton I would SUPPORT rec.games.pbm.announce as a MODERATED newsgroup. I would expect this includes turn writing and analysis tools, as well as game source code, and new version info. I.e. my occasional post about a new version of Blind Galaxy, or posts for enhancend versions of GalaxyTV or the like. Claifiying that would change my I think the proposed purpose of rec.games.pbm.announce NEEDS WORK. to an OK. KMGraphiks@aol.com Ken Mitchell Sorry, I don't think the creation of a new ng is the answer. The players and moderators of PBM games should stay together in rec.games.pbm even though some disagree about ad policy. We're supposed to all be in this together. phil@phildee.demon.co.uk Phil Shulkind I wouldn't have supported the proposal, but it's an excellent idea to stop the posting of game specific newsletters on rec.games.pbm, along with ads for pbm-list. I would prefer to see things limited to informational "advertising" postings on a quarterly basis, plus whenever an entirely *new* game is launched - not the 53rd game of Horrible Hobbits about to start! And I wouldn't expect to find my postings followed up with "there are lots of other games on pbm-list"... wlogan@bu.edu I don't think there needs to be one at all! fsp@umd.umich.edu Michael Murphy [proposed purpose NEEDS WORK...] (although I think you have a good start. :) ) Damian.G.Walker@dcs.hull.ac.uk Damian Walker If you're interested in the reasoning behind my answer-- it's because I think that periodic, informative ads belong in rec.games.pbm itself. If the group was swamped with tens of ads each day I might think differently, but the traffic in this group is so little that I usually read it while I'm online. I don't want a situation where, as a GM (once my game is actually released), I have to think about every post: is it off topic, does it belong in the other group, will netcops accuse me of trying to advertise by the back door if I reply to a query for info about my game? If everything belongs in rec.games.pbm these are not an issue, there's one group on the subject and that's where you post. I would have no intention of posting periodic ads myself, but I would be announcing changes, addons and new games as and when they arose (regulated if this happened frequently). lindahl@pbm.com Greg Lindahl BTW, I am not interested in moderating it; I have more than enough work with the pbm list. You may get some opposition because of the game [name?]. Other announce groups have a quite different character.
