A young officer galloped up much too eager to give his report. "SIR, 3663 silver captured from the enemy, SIR!" Rommel's reply was simple and direct, "Shut up." The young officer was crushed, he could have taken it if Rommel was angry, but if anything Rommel sounded sleepy. Holly comments to Rastlin, "What wrong with him?" Rastlin shrugged. "Reports just in from the Durness area, those 1000 crack SEP troops that slipped behind us have just slaughtered men of House al-Kazzam neutral trader." Holly nodded, "Well whats one more enemy to SEP they already have more than they can handle. I suppose he don't be making fun of uncle knights rushing to use privy any more." Rastlin chuckles then spots Rommel riding southwest alone. "Great Geoff, he's heading out and he army isn't even ready to advance yet." Much confusion follows as Rastlin quickly gives the orders to get the army moving. Earlier Rommel had stated, "We need to get those SEP troops in Durness this month before they expect us, or they'll hide behind the invulerable city guards." Several hours later the army catches up to Rommel who is riding slowly southwest. Rastlin is furious. "Rommel, what do you think your doing? Your in command here you can't just go riding off." Rommel doesn't even lookup, "It doesn't matter. We had what? 7 or 8 major victories in a row killed over 7000 SEP troops. Its too easy." Rastlin sighes, "You've been reading the art of war again haven't you?" Rommel begins to quote verbatum: To foresee a victory which the ordinary man can foresee is not the acme of excellence. Neither is it if you triumph in battle and are universally acclaimed "expert," for to lift an autumn down requires no great strength, to distinguish between the sun and moon is no test of vision, to hear the thunderclap is no indication of acute hearing. Rastlin thinks about it for a moment and says, "Fine then lets make a few errors and thus be uncertain of victory." With that he turns and gives the orders for a large part of the army to follow him. The endless war around Durness had caught up with Alhaam and his House. It was in the month of May that the hordes from the Supreme Empire of Persecution finally went mad. The SEP troops had not been paid in months, their supplies had run out and the local peasantry had no more to give. As one man they rose up and attacked the unprepared soldiers and unarmed peasantry around Durness, slaughtering them in a bloodthirsty mad rage. It was only silver and food they were after and when this was not available, rumour had it, the fresh corpses themselves were eaten. The losses to House al-Kazzam were shattering. To the north all the Kazzami farm labourers were killed along with the House's finest sailor, Captain Abdullatief. The lumberjacks south of Durness along with their families were massacred. Also in the southern jungles were several Kazzami skill masters, unarmed honest labourers. But woe! the greatest loss caused a black pit of grief to open in Alhaams soul. His finest servant, his right hand man, the viking who had become his friend, Sven the Restless, was no more. All that was found was his crushed head, lying next to the charred half-eaten remains of his horse. In his grief Alhaam ordered the House to go into full mourning. All shops were closed; the first time in living memory. Several days later Alhaam met with his accountants and scribes. "There is to be a change in our trade arrangements with the Supreme Empire of Persecution." The accountants feared the worst. "They will no longer be extended credit. Cash only." One accountant fainted and fell on his abacus. The rest gulped and nodded. "Furthermore..." The acountants looked at each other. There was more? "They will be charged the full retail price no matter the size of purchase. If we lose their custom so be it." Two more accountants fainted. The scribe recording the orders broke his stylus. "That is all. Go" Alhaam looked down at the floor while his servants left, dragging their fallen comrades with them. The beads from the shattered abacus had rolled onto the floor. By chance they had formed a rough approximation of an ancient symbol, whose meaning is only known to the heads of merchants houses. It was an omen.
