But what about everybody else? From: godot22@earthlink.net (PJ Killian) Date: Sun, 06 Jul 1997 00:00:00 +0000 The thing that I find the most amusing about this little running battle (read: the Ads thread) that's taking place in this newsgroup (about which I have my opinions, which I will largely keep to myself) is that regardless of who is right and who is wrong, the argument is a rather esoteric one based on a largely hypothetical problem. By which I mean: have you SEEN some of the other newsgroups? Personally, I go to bed at night thanking Jah for the incomprehensibly high signal-to-noise ratio in this ng. Does anybody honestly believe that if the FAQ were changed to read that "anyone can post anything here at any time," this ratio would drop noticably? CONCEPT: If someone is going to be a scumbag and violate the tacit rules of a conversation, they're going to do it, FAQ or no FAQ. Discuss. But meanwhile, this repetitive, dreary debate over a largely academic point rages on, with no constructive solution in sight. Stop to consider for a minute what this means to people who are not members of the Charmed Circle of regular posters or people who have subscribed to this group for years. Two guesses, and you're right if the first one is "NOTHING." If I had subscribed to this group four months later than I did, I would have thought that PBM players were largely maniacs and probably would have found a more productive hobby, like alphabetizing my spices. Yes, for people who know what they're doing, there are resources like the PBM list. But what does the impressionable newbie turn to to find out about PBM games? Perhaps the NEWSGROUP DEDICATED TO THEM? Hmmmmm? Everyone's got to start somewhere, but if I was starting into PBm/PBeM right now and the first place I turned to for information about the hobby was rec.games.pbm, I would feel so out of place I wouldn't know where to begin. I know that this group is for more than babysitting neophytes, but let's try and put on a better face for the hobby than this, OK?
