Ads, FAQ's, and Bandwidth. From: soliiigm@aol.com (Sol III GM) Date: Tue, 15 Jul 1997 00:00:00 +0000 This is a long one. You might wish to delete it, since it's basically just a rant, and a parting one at that. I am bowing out of this particular flamewar, since I have now come to understand the weapons which are being used, and the way things will have to occur. Greg has stated in E-Mail to me that although he can change the FAQ at any time based on input from the group, voices in his head, or personal whim, he will not change it on this subject, and that we can not force him to. He's right. Pissy, but right. Basically, the method that he is saying will change the FAQ is a going through what basically amounts to chartering this newsgroup. In other words, 3-5 months of more of the same in an effort to change what is rapidly becoming an obvious lost cause. Here are our options. 1. We go through the BS of a formal vote on what is an informal document and force this change down Greg's throat. This is sure to cause more bad feelings than already exist. 2. We write a new FAQ and go through the BS of dueling FAQ's which will cause more problems in the long run. The new FAQ will have just as much authority as Greg's, but will always seem questionable in some eyes. 3. We form a new newsgroup and allow ads on it, either forming rec.games.pbm.announce (Or market) or form rec.games.pbem. Either of these ideas is possible, but either of them would seperate and divide this group, something that I have no wish to see. 4. We shut up, and live with the fact that Greg is going to do exactly what he wants regardless of public opinion, and the only way to get him to change the FAQ when he does not agree with you is a formal vote that is usually only used for starting new groups. Since I have had a weekend with no computer handy to think this over, I have come to several conclusions. First off, I believe Greg really does think he is protecting this newsgroup. That only makes this situation sad. Second, there was probably a better way to handle this on my part, but I get the feeling that it would have made very little difference based on a reading of the last few years of this group in the last month or so. Well, while I will still be in the NewsGroup, unless the current situation changes, I am bowing out of this thread. Good luck.
