Public apology and clarification From: soliiigm@aol.com (Sol III GM) Date: Thu, 17 Jul 1997 00:00:00 +0000 Greetings. I have been trying to figure out when I called Greg Lindahl a liar. Through a series of rude messages where I was honestly trying to find out so that I could see if an apology was needed, and I was told "Look it up" I came across this in Deja News. Since it's the only time I have *ever* said anything in public that could be construed as such, I thought I had better clarify this. The exact situation and quote follows. Sol III GM (Me) said: >Greg Lindahl said: >>kmgraphiks@aol.com (KMGraphiks) writes: >>> Someone had posted that Greg had >>> threatened to contact their ISP after they posted an ad. >> >>Repeating a half-truth many times does not make it true. I believe, >>and the post I think finally agreed, that what I did was to let him >>know that AOL, his provider, had a policy against posting ads >>to groups on Usenet which did not welcome them. > > The Poster in this case did NOT agree. The poster agreed that you had a >different semantic view of the situation, and acknowledged that your >particular view could be correct, since the poster did not save all of the >e-mail from that conversation. However, the end result was still the >same. I posted an ad, 2 years after I had posted my first one, and you >threatened to contact my ISP over it. That is a fact. All of the >semantic side stepping in the world will not change that fact. > Now, the additional fact is, you quoted the FAQ to me in making the >threat, so I have to assume that is the policy you were defending. Call >it your opinion all you want, but you and I both know that an opinion has >very little weight with an ISP, but that FAQ carries a lot of weight. >Basically, if I post an ad, and AOL get's 10 complaints, they will come >ask me what the deal is. If I post an ad, and a self-appointed net.cop >who maintains the FAQ makes a complaint, AOL will start investigating it. >Greg, you are dishonest in trying to make the situation sound any >different than it is. > Post an Ad here that Greg does not like, and he will threaten to contact >your ISP and report it, in my experience. I stand by everything in the post except for the next to the last sentence. Allow me to apologise for appearing to question Greg's honesty in this public forum. Allow me to further state, that although Greg insists there is a difference in what happened, the end result is the same, and therefore it makes any protests to the contrary rather moot. A difference that *makes* no difference is *no* difference. Once again, my choice of words was poor, and did not reflect what I meant accurately, since I was attempting to show a dishonest statement rather than a dishonest person. I now see that some people can not see the difference, and using my own logic, I can not blame them. Greg, I am sorry for in any way questioning your honesty on this subject publically.
