I'm currently in Atlantis 3.  A game which might meet your
requirements.  It is commercial/computer moderated/ weekly/ open ended.
You have the choice of pure war/trade/magic factions or a mix of all
three as you see fit.

The game is currently on turn 60 but there are still considerable
amounts of exploitable
land. I would suggest however that you go the alliance route at this
point.
This deep into the game a lone faction could be hard to establish
without getting stepped on.  A couple of alliances which are very kind
and helpfull to newbies would include the AIF and the Gale grand
alliance(I'd suggest Gale).  Both of these groups will aid you and allow
considerable freedom for the promiss of mutal defence and would likely
be quite eager should you take at least some trade capability.

You might not be looking for commercial games but this one is only 1$us
per week, which is quite reasonable compared to many hand moderated
games.

I don't have the address handy but a yahoo seach for atlantis 3 should
lead you
to the web site. Once there you can find the rules and some links to
alliance information.

If you look to this newsgroup often you'll often see the Atlantis times
posted.
The times has player writen stories/threats/propaganda which can
sometimes actually be of aid in the game.
