Messy... very messy. However, I've only seen about 1/5 of all thegames I've
played in up until now reach endstage... Some lose all life,
as everyone moves on, in a couple, the GM was discovered to also be
playing and a number of the players abandoned, and i some the lead
player was sooooo far out in front, the game was declared over.

Looking back through some older games of Galaxy (as opposedto Galaxy NG) it
appears most players had developed at least 1 whole
point of tech by Turn 10. The evential leaders then accelerated this,
as they had some other colonised planets by then, so 2.2 - 2.7
by Turn 20.

NG is different, as you can have varying numbers of starting planets
(most common seems to be 1000 + 2 x 400 fully developed). Tech
development is correspondingly faster...

Yes to both. You generally *need* to get your Drive Tech up fairlyquickly, or
you can't get anywhere... then you need to be able to defend
what you have just acquired. And you still need to have enough ships to
adequately service everything... a tricky balance.

Worse yet, there all these other people out there doing random things...
so the tactical situation has to be taken into account... if you're
under serious attack from early on, getting some fighters into space
is more important than getting more Tech. Oh, and no one I've seen
get to the mid stages of a game has spent much time developing Cargo tech.
