Atlantis 3.0: Times 66 From: Geoff Dunbar <gdunbar@atlantis.prankster.com> Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 00:00:00 +0000 Subject: Atlantis 3.0: Times 66 Atlantis 3.0 Times June, 6 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Email admin30@prankster.com with game issues. A trained eye can read much from a letter without even opening it. Alhaam, for instance, could tell a writ of payment from a summons to the mayor's revenue office merely by the sound the envelope made between his secretary's fingers, without even seeing it. This letter, however, looked like nothing he had ever seen before. It was held together by bits of floater hide. This explained its ability to levitate. >From the various markings on it this letter had travelled vast distances. It had crossed three continents (one of them twice - the Frontier Nursing Company's postal service was plagued by the Guild of 70-and-still-stabbing Assassins, who seemed to be enraged at the site of a postal uniform), been transported by barbarians, sea elves, nomads, a retired orc looking to do some travelling before heading to the Great Anvil, a mage and even underdwarves. It was addressed to him personally. The return address and name of sender were covered by a dark brown smudge smelling faintly of sulphur and strongly of armpit - the orc must have received an arrow into his upper shield arm and used the letter as a bandage. Most interestingly, it bore a marking which closely resembled the Kazzami crest if seen through the tip of the flame of a wasp wax candle. Having gleaned as much information as he could from the letters' exterior it was now time to open it. Carefully Alhaam cut through the dried tentacles, pealed off the lush fungal growths and slit through the albatross hide to reveal the waxed parchment. Slowly he unfolded it and began to read. It was a reply from Uncle Nazeem, to whom he had written many months ago. The message was short and to the point: Come and visit. There is a map at the back. Don't be late. regards, Uncle ' Zeem Alhaam began to plan for a long voyage. from "The History of House al-Kazzam" by Sven Kazzamsen. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Clan Myhkul (347): The Warriors of Clan Myhkul has begun to gather. Sources report that GALE has finally has some success against the Nameless in the Daingean area and in the underworld near Duucshire, however the seemingly invulnerable Nameless main army continues to advance into GALE terriory. One our investigative reporters intercepted this scroll from a 70's faction to someone named Mark in Uncle. -------------------- From: Les Rodeurs <bonnefon@labs.polycnrs-gre.fr> Subject: Rendez-vous. Hi Mark, My boat, "The Just For Fun Tour" in desert (50,108) will go this turn to mountain (53,107) and attack it. I think you've send a 69 leader unit to defend Uncle territories. Could you be at the rendez-vous? Cheers, Rincevent, Les Rodeurs (~The Prowlers). -------------------- No further comment from the 70's was forth comming, however Sun Tzu of uncle granted us an interview. Reporter: Mr. Tzu, is it true? Did the 70's rendezvous with the uncle unit in mountain (53,107). Sun Tzu: Well yes, and no. Reporter: Are you being deliberatly obscure Mr. Tzu? The people have a right to know. Sun Tzu: I believe the message was ment to taunt Cthulhu. You see the 69 man unit in question (really it was 89) was in the region adjacent to the 70's ship and while the uncle unit was mounted on flying horses it could not reach the rendezvous hex which would was seven hexes away. Supposedly uncle could do nothing about the impending attack on the mountain region. Reporter: Supposedly? Sun Tzu: They failed to notice the stealth 8 assassin in the same region as their ship. The 70's men on the ship were wiped out to the man before they had a chance to sail. We managed to salvage 28 mithril armor amongst other things, certianly worth the disruption of trade in one desert hex. That reminds me I need to see why the trade factions are producing in a mere desert hex. Now if you'll excuse me. Reporter: Wait, Mr. Tzu. What did you mean by yes and no? Clearly they didn't make it to the rendezvous hex. Sun Tzu: Two other 70's galleons sailed into that hex and attacked with some 200 combat 5 leaders and some bowmen. They lost and we'll have to finnish them off this month. It does point out the need for a better defense in certain areas some more scouts at sea. Grayson, Grand Marshall The Dark Legions (7) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Someone asked how the 70s/UNCLE war was going. Here's a report from the far northern front, where the whole thing began. For those who are bothered by the space of this, my apologies, but I thought some might be interested to see the real size of some of the forces involved in this war. Not so grand as the mighty battles some have claimed, but plenty of bodies on the ground when the dust settled. This is one of the larger, prehaps the largest, battle we've had in the north, but not so terribly important as some. The first two reports are from turn 64, where the 70s and I pooled our efforts to answer the question, "What if they gave a war and nobody came?" Here is what happened when my army advanced into Roin. Studs for Spuds are my team. Hector (31116) attacks Studs for Spuds (2197) in mountain (52,24) in Glin! Attackers: Hector (31116), behind, leader [LEAD], sword [SWOR], plate armor [PARM], horse [HORS], tactics 5, combat 3. Flying Circus (11834), behind, leader [LEAD], horse [HORS], combat 5; And now for something completely different.... Xbow Teacher (40115), behind, leader [LEAD], crossbow [XBOW], crossbow 5. Andromede (8988), behind, leader [LEAD], mithril sword [MSWO], tactics 5, combat 5. Sailors (29793), 5 vikings [VIKI], sword [SWOR], crossbow [XBOW]. Guardians (29791), behind, 2 leaders [LEAD], crossbow [XBOW], tactics 5, combat 1. Elite Troop (14248), 9 leaders [LEAD], 9 horses [HORS], crossbow [XBOW], 9 mithril swords [MSWO], 9 plate armor [PARM], combat 5, riding 3. Defenders: Studs for Spuds (2197), behind, 10 nomads [NOMA], crossbow [XBOW], crossbow 1. and about 2000 other troops that advanced into Roin. Tricky things, those HOSTILE settings. The other 650 70s troops in Roin provided strong moral support for this brave assault by their commanders, who prehaps took leading from the front a bit too far... Oh, lets not forget the sailors, upholding a fine tradition of 70s mariners charging onto my spears. Let me direct your attention to the AVOID setting, gentlefolk. Round 1: Hector (31116) loses 20. Studs for Spuds (2197) loses 0. Hector (31116) is routed! Total Casualties: Hector (31116) loses 20. Damaged units: 29791, 40115, 31116, 8988, 11834, 14248, 29793. Studs for Spuds (2197) loses 0. Spoils: 1601 silver [SILV], 6 horses [HORS], 2 swords [SWOR], 3 crossbows [XBOW], 5 mithril swords [MSWO], 5 plate armor [PARM]. The silver was particularly helpful to my starving army, saved 160 men. A noble gift. Meanwhile, back with the brave rear gaurd... carpe diem (17443) attacks Studs for Spuds (4639) in plain (52,22) in Sines! Attackers: Merci Agnes 13669, Nursie Sans Frontier 219, (44146), behind, wood elf [WELF]. And lots more besides, including a stealth-8 mage with a staff of lightning, named the Guest. I won't put a reward out on him, but if you kill him, you get his stuff. See the turn 65 battle for the full advertisement. By the way, you'll notice that the attacker is trying to pass as a unit belonging to my ally. This is the same faction, Wiz Hard or Die!, that had all those one man units at the gates lately. The trick might have worked better if the fake unit number was in () like real unit numbers are, but then the trick basically depends on me being either stupid or lazy, so I guess quality work wouldn't be needed to fool me. Defenders: Studs for Spuds (4639), leader [LEAD], sword [SWOR], combat 3. Studs for Spuds (5234), leader [LEAD], horse [HORS], mithril sword [MSWO], combat 4, riding 2. Studs for Spuds (5275), behind, leader [LEAD], horse [HORS], double bow [DBOW], combat 1, crossbow 2. Studs for Spuds (5651), behind, horse [HORS], leader [LEAD], tactics 2, combat 3, riding 1. Brave lads, they faced the foe alone. Bad choice that, the foe had 400 untrained men in the front lines. I might actually have won this one. Ah well, 20/20 hindsight. carpe diem (17443) gets a free round of attacks. Studs for Spuds (4639) loses 4. Studs for Spuds (4639) is routed! Total Casualties: Studs for Spuds (4639) loses 4. Damaged units: 5651, 5275, 5234, 4639. carpe diem (17443) loses 0. Spoils: sword [SWOR], 38 silver [SILV], double bow [DBOW], horse [HORS]. Finally, in turn 65, we meet. Here are all the gory details. This time there are only 200 untrained troops in the front lines of the enemy... Battles during turn: Unit (31412) attacks Charge! (29045) in mountain (52,24) in Glin! There were no spoils, but again I failed to optimise my position, I didn't have my men drop everything after the battle, so the 70s should get the stuff this turn, barring foolish errors. Not prehaps the stuff of great victories, but given that my army has been on the verge of starving to death all winter, I'll take a bloody draw, particularly since some of the surviving 70s units had 10% losses to starvation and desertion because my survivors sucked up taxes and wages in Roin. I am well pleased with this army, they've done thier job, and done it well. I'll miss them. When informed that they would all be given medals for thier work, they were mostly quite pleased, until some wiseguy told them what posthumous meant. Oh well. Oh, by the way, to my foes: Look behind you. :(=) -Clueless Newbies ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Sven, the recruitment posters are going up as we speak.
