Well said Phil, but you might like to try a few websites that deal with
pbm/pbem games.  Phil's place (below) is a good place to start, plenty of
others are regularly advertised here as well (not going to mention them
incase I get it wrong).

But it also depends on whether you want a free game or to pay or if you want
to play by mail or e-mail.  Then, do you want fantasy or sci-fi?  Open-ended
or close-ended (with a goal).

Confusing eh?

You might also want to contact a local commercial pbm company and ask them
to send you a brochure - or keep looking in this newsgroup for openings
(especially ones that say for starting players) - for example, Armin Trott
is starting a tutorial game for VGA-Planets
