There are about 150 leagues of the UNITED soccer game in Germany (10
to 108 players in 1 to 9 leagues) which are played by mail or e-mail.
Another few dozends of them are run in the UK, in the Netherland,
Swden, ... All in all there are supposed to be more than 5000 players
actually playing this game in the world!

This game is not only free for all who want to play it (copy and mail
costs if it is in a printed issue) but it is normally (90 per cent of
all UNITED leagues in Germany) run by a software which is available
for shareware download.
I am afraid I only know a site were you can download a German software
which was written by the "UNITED-pope" Michael Schroegl
(http://www.quantum.de/~sachs/amtsblatt/programme/unitedpc.188/inhalt.shtml),
but as it was pointed out here in the list there is also an english
software which was obviously written by ALAN PARR, to whom I must pass
the honour for inviting the game more than 15 years ago.

Of course - as for all the other free pbm games that I know, the
players don`t have to use any software, this is only to make the game
run by the GM (game master). Only intuition, mind, ... is needed by
the players. But their are free players managment software (for
everyone who don`t want to manage his team out of his diary) as well.

For the rules of UNITED I also only know a www-site for a German
version
(http://www.stud.uni-hannover.de/~teytnar/united/regeln.html)>. But I
am quite sure that their must be one english version out their for
free as well.

Their are quite a lot football/soccer games (and software) which are
run on a professional (profit) basis. The most of them are based on
the basic ideas of United.

Let me emphasize (is this the right word ?) that UNITED is forbidden
to be run on a profit basis by Alan Parr. It`s a free game.
