PROFANE LANGUAGE AND PREJUDICIAL MESSAGE POSTING From: "JPM" <mindshift@usa.net> Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 00:00:00 +0000 It's been a while since I posted here to due other commitments, and I've only lurked on occasion over the past few weeks. But since stepping back into the newsgroup I've noticed a rise in profane messages from certain accounts. Disgusted and repulsed by the content of these messages, I have posted an email to abuse@aol.com regarding these same messages, and attached no less than 20 individual postings that I picked up in my mailbox today. I'll post the outcome of the message here for all to read. Below is a copy of my message to AOL. -- Jason Paul McCartan MindShift Design "Altering Perceptions, Creating Worlds" THE MESSAGE ============ Please find attached copies of newsgroup postings posted to rec.games.pbm by AOL account moderator5@aol.com and igeezerl@aol.com available for download as of today's date. Myself and the other users have previously forwarded messages to yourself regarding one of these accounts. To date, there does not seem to have been any action taken to remedy the situation. These messages are intrusive, waste bandwidth, and are sometimes costly to users of this newsgroup, myself included. As this is a newsgroup that is frequented by a "FAMILY" audience, and is easily accessible to many people, it would be in all users of this newsgroup's interest to see the termination of these accounts' abusive activities on this channel. I find the messages contained in the newsgroup postings prejudicial, abusive, racist and totally uncalled for. If the account holders of these accounts are personally responsible for these postings, I call for AOL to immediately terminate the accounts in question. If, in the case, that the accounts have been used without the account holder's knowledge or sanction, i.e. hijacking, then I call for AOL to immediately attempt to discover where the messages are being posted from, and open communications with the ISP regarding the user's abuse of their account. In either case, I would also call for prosecution in some form to deter further action by those responsible. I would also like to take this opportunity to mention that I have always been aware that AOL have pursued a corporate identity linking them to the concept of "FAMILY" and "FAMILY"-orientated services. I do hope that I have not been incorrect in my perception. I know many users of AOL services, and they are appalled that messages of this prejudicial nature are allowed to pass through AOL's news server without filtration.
