I would like to state that IMHO GalaxyNG does this wrong.  In NG all
the players ships suddenly disappeares and the planets becomes
uninhabited.

I take part i a NG game where one of the top positions just dropped
out, and let me tell you: Those of us who were close neighbours earned
a lot on that.  Gaining a home planet was a minor matter compared to
grabbing five other big planets suddenly undefended.

If instead the position had continued playing, with no orders given,
at least taking the planets would have been an effort.  Also, I would
have hesitated because I wouldn't know that the player was gone.

Even better would be to let a minimal AI give orders that at least
does something semi-sensible.  (Build cargo ships, build industry,
build warships, send diplomatic messages(just kidding))

In my view you should just let the position coast or let an AI take
over.
